Back to Luxor

Post by carrie »

Just got back to Luxor after a week in Hurghada, the place was heaving, loads and loads of tourists. The hotel I was staying in was full, admittedly a lot of Egyptians because of Eid and a lot of Germans and Russians. Visited quite a few other hotels and they were all the same, the streets were packed all the restaurants/shops seemed to be doing well.
Back to Luxor and went over the other side today, called for lunch in the Agricultural Club which is usually very busy, just my friend and I there, not one tourist did I see. Walked from the ferry all up TV Street and Medina even the traffic seemed quieter, I know it was hot but coming back went through the Winter Palace gardens, one just one tourist by the pool there.
The only sign of life was the police by the ferry happily loading all the incorrectly parked motor bikes into the back of their vans.
If I was a first time visitor to Luxor must admit I would be very disappointed with the lack of tourists and atmosphere. However great the hotels etc. who wants to be the only person staying in a hotel or eating out.

The way it's going, I doubt any Muslim country will have a tourist industry left by the end of this year, or indeed the next. :td

ISIS appear to be doing their job very well... :cg

Sort of taking over where the Taliban left off in Afghanistan back in 2001

All that Buddhist artwork destroyed, which is ( or was ) easily on par with anything Egypt has to offer..

As Carrie says, Hurghada is heaving.

Just back from a few weeks in London and had to fly via Istanbul as all the usual flights full for the week.

Obviously the activities of Da'esh does have some impact on tourism to Egypt but I think Luxor has a whole raft of problems beyond terrorism :(

Question to Carrie. 'You said you walked through the Winter Palace Gardens, did manage to access The WP through the back entrance at the bottom of TV street ?....

Yes Who I did, I smile very nicely at the men on security, look tired and hot, which isn't hard and they let me through. By the way what does CRH stand for?
