Post system in Luxor

Post by dsaxelby »

Hi can anyone explain the post system in Luxor? suspect it maybe a case of renting a PO Box at the post office, and generally how long does post take to arrive from the UK?

First of all you have to wait for the carrier pidgin to find its box. But, if they are using it to put their cup, sugar and other stuff in it will have to flap around for a bit until its free. Then various members of staff have to security check it by shaking it up and down and holding it up to a light. If they think that there is anything in worth nicking the letter 'never got here'. Birthday and Xmas cards are the most popular as they found out that money is usually put in them. You pay a little rent each month for the box but as they keep loosing the keys the thing is usually left open so any correspondence is usually taken home to teach the kids English. The most secure form of delivery is by Fed-X or any of others that deliver to this non receiver of her Majesty's mail.

In the early days when I first came to live here I would be advised by various people that cards had been sent to me - had I received them? No. The only items that got through within a week of being posted were 2 Council Tax demands.

Pop into The Old Winter Palace use their bar, their stationary their postal service and their toilets, job done. Now the reverse is to post from the UK to c/o the OWP Luxor Egypt then walk in demand your post & a G&T ice and slice, everything else is a waste of your time and money.....
ps: it's worked pretty well for a few hundred years, 'without fail.
pss; failing that, a Queens' Courier will arrive at my door, if it's really important!
top tip: add a title to the end of your name, works wonders.

I gave up posting to Luxor from the Uk after three separate letters failed to arrive.

Definitely recommend using Fed Ex or DHL if you really must want to use a postal service. It will cost but is the most reliable method for getting the mail through. Had a couple of letters delivered the other day. They came via the DHL office in Karnak and were collected for us by a neighbour who works in Karnak. We knew nothing of the letters until he came round to tell us they were there and he would collect them for us the next day! They had come down from the HSBC in Cairo.

We had a PO box for several years, they are a complete and utter waste of time and money!

1/ You're charged a fee for the privilege, depending on the size of the box.

2/ The lady in charge of them will telephone you when something arrives, and expect you to reimburse her 5le for her phone call. (The item isn't in your box, but in her drawer so that you have to go while she's there in order to retrieve it!)

3/ It seems that all incoming mail is opened by Customs in Cairo, to check for items upon which duty will be charged, and to remove anything which might be described as derogatory or disparaging towards a government. (My Private Eye magazines never ever got here!) Or to remove anything which someone in the office might take a fancy to!

4/ If Customs decide that duty is payable, the recipient has to pay the duty before they are allowed to know what the item is!

5/ If you happen to forget your key, all you have to do is to shuffle the block of boxes to one side and stick your hand into the open back of (any?) box.

The good Dr's idea of having stuff sent to a business address does work (sometimes) but there is still the nonsense in Cairo to contend with, as it is with any way of getting things sent. A private courier is best though, in my opinion, when a telephone number should also be supplied, so that they can ring you when it is in Luxor and finally ready to be collected or delivered.

A worker at the Post Ofice in Luxor once demonstrated to me how they removed letters from envelopes without tearing said envelope and returned it the same way. Very skilled I must say.
Before the days of computers we used to have snail mail and the only unopened correspondence was from a pilot who used to staple randomly all over the envelope - about 15/20 times. Post office staff obvously couldn't be bothered to deal with that. 8)
Smile! It confuses people

PO Boxes are not safe, for a little money you can view anyone you want, so forget them. Couriers and alike always the best. If you post from Luxor use the Hotel Post, mail put into a mailbox is lost the minute your envelope leaves your hands. Mail from the UK is normally 7-14days. same going back. Couriered mail approx. 3-4 days each way. I have contacted all I deal with and now only receive electric mail even from establishments.

All it would take is some bright spark to come up with a delivery system for this to happen. But not, I think, with the currant problems that the country is experiencing.

Just to let any one who is interested know :urm: and to conclude the thread.

Posted approx 3 weeks ago to a business PO Box and it arrived :) apparently in tact (did not contain money or any item of value).
It is what it is.

And that dsaxelby is due to the fact that they had been told of your post on here so was expecting the post so made certain said post arrived at the destination point. Try not posting a post like the last post and see if the post that you have posted gets to the person expecting the post.
