Death by the Nile

Post by WIZARD » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:22 am

My driver and I were almost killed in a road traffic accident some 40km outside Luxor last Wednesday. We were returning to Luxor from a totally useless trip to Cairo regarding my Visa application. The trip was absolutely unnecessary as I didn't need to be there in person as I had been lead to believe by a host of Egyptian bureaucrats over the past two years. As things stand, I must still return to England to break my 25yr Visa and obtain a new one on my return to Egypt, just like any other tourist. It's a new rule the Egyptian Bureaucrats have thought up. So I plan to fly to the UK a week on Monday, and return to Egypt on the following day to satisfy the Egyptian Authorities. I will have to hang around Heathrow for at least two days, a feat for even a younger man. I'm dreading it, as I don't know Heath Row and will be all alone, but I suppose I will manage. I'll have to manage,as the the Egyptian authorities obviously seem to show little or no concern for those of us with physical disabilities.

Glad you are OK & hopefully near to resolving your visa issue.

We often travel via Heathrow, it was easier to get to Crete via there than direct from here last year so we flew in Monday, overnight at the Premier & fly out again on Tuesday, maybe that will work for you? Rather than lug cases on & off buses we often use a local taxi company at £12 each way, presumably you won't have cases but at least it would be an easy transfer. I can PM you the number if you want it?

Can you not book into one of the airport hotels Wizard? One good thing you are going to get your visa.

Do you need to go to Heathrow, or would another destination satisfy the conditions? I suppose that if you are flying from Luxor then Heathrow may be a soft option, but I would be looking at other possibilities especially as your return flight will involve a transfer at Cairo. Why not one of the destinations in the Middle East that are served directly from Luxor? Kuwait, Doha or Jeddah?

When I was working in the USA my Visa said specifically I had to return to Canada and had to be specifically entering the USA from my HOME country. Dunno if this is Wiz' case but to be safe I'd be re-entered from your country of origin the UK.

BEST of LUCK with this Wiz! Hope you get your Visa issue sorted out.

I have found the Travelodge at both Heathrow and Gatwick quite cheap when booked on line before travelling. Rather than a poor nights sleep in the airport, a half decent bed in the Travelodge would be safer and more comfy

Last June I stayed at the travelodge at Heathrow and I had booked the bus but my flight was late getting into heathrow meaning I missed the last bus and had to take a taxi which cost me £25 for a 5min journey, I sent BA an e-mail and they reinburst the £25 without seeing the receipt. :D

Although it seems a bit of a hassle for you, at least it looks like your going to get your visa which will allow you to walk the streets during the daylight hours, head held high instead of chancing getting flattened by some crazy English dude revving around on his bike in the thickening darkness of night. :D You posted just in time as I was just about to offer you the loan of my 'something for the weekend sir' false Dusak head so you could get out more. :up [see Zooropa's blog post to see the fits all size heads head]

For all those concerned about Wiz, don't worry!
He's not in a dungeon with his genitalia wired to the mains (mind you, that wouldn't be a tremendous hardship, given the state of the electricity supply in Egypt) but is now in safe hands, fed, watered (well, wined and dined!) and is now fast asleep.
So, at this moment at least, all is well (or as well as can be expected!).

Don't know why, but this reminds me. Did you ever pick up your seeds from Bombay? And if you did, did you plant them, and if so, did they grow?
