That explains the twelve o'clock change in the HSBC as on a couple of occasions I was asked to wait a few moments when wanting to change money close to this time. I thought it was an attempt at Egyptian humor.

Not necessarily MT the rate can go up as well as down.
Let's also be fair when I came to live here the rate was 5le to the pound, gradually went up then fell a few years later to 7 now it's 11+ officially, well from my bank anyway, so we are still not doing too badly.

Although the 11le you get today doesn't get you as much as 5le did when you first moved there.

Very correct Brian, when we came it was around 7LE to the pound, could fill your weekly shopping trolley for around 200 - 300LE. The last weekly shop we did in Luxor was 1200LE which is a 400% rise in 6 years, that's crazy inflation. But also what you would expect when tax is paid at the source of purchasing goods. Also you have to remember that the cost of a weekly shop in Luxor can be around 30 - 40 GBP dearer than in Hurghada at Spinneysfor exactly the same goods. I think one day Luxor will get a Supermarket for the people, but would not like to say when, it's maybe a few years away. But it maybe supply and demand. Luxor for food is one of the dearest places in Egypt to shop. It's probably not far off for anything else either, and it cannot all be put down to transport.
