Wolf Restaurant

Post by carrie »

Just had lunch in the Wolf Restaurant, straight up the sugar cane road from Attars the bakers, blue building on the right.
Very nice owners and staff and the food although I only had an omelet was very nice.

Been there twice, but was waiting until they sort out some teething troubles before recommending them. Silly things like lending out their corkscrew so that they could not open a bottle of Omar Khayyam. Not being able to make a pizza because it was raining.

The Moroccan meat tagine was excellent, but would have served 3 at least, and came with several accompanying dishes that I had specifically said I did not want. I expect that the vast pile of left-overs were not wasted.

The calamari had obviously been frozen and brought from the Mediterranean. It was a bit tough, which was no great surprise. A nice idea that did not really come off. :wi :eat

We have had two excellent meals there so far. Definitely worth a try.
Yes they are in the early stages but the more custom they get the better they will become.

I agree with Brian excellent tagine. I had the lamb one there yesterday & maybe they have learnt from Brian but when offered rice etc I declined & got exactly what I asked for Lamb tagine on its own :D More than enough to make a meal.

I questioned the reason for the name. Apparently back before the High Dam was built and the Nile still flooded annually there was a natural high spot there upon which the Summer crossing ferry would moor. This was known locally as Wolf Island. This is the location of the restaurant.
The driving force of the brothers who created the restaurant has just returned from the USA where he lived for 25 years so has rather different standards along with his Moroccan wife.

I quote one item from a photo of the menu I have seen:
Find Calamari
Calamari South Still
with french past pull Indian test
That doesn't even sound like something that Google Translate could come up with. I'm guessing it is Southern Style Calamari but beyond that I can't make heads or tails of what it is. And there is nothing really called Southern Style Calamari so what it is I don't know.

Well as it's only a 5 minute walk from 'the old adobe hacienda, I'll give it a spin upon my return.
Having once been a resturant reviewer, I shall review it for you.

Myself and wife were going to try it out, but after talking to some 6 month tourists who have been decided to give it a miss. I know you cannot please everyone, but they really are trustworthy, they told us not to bother making the effort. When asked why, they would not comment just said, certainly not for us.

There is a party this evening (Friday 25th March) at Wolf. Music and a belly dancer are promised. I will not be there as this kind of entertainment is not my thing. Wolf has a very small roof terrace (only about 20 covers) and any music is likely to be very loud. There is nowhere to get away from it.

I would recommend everyone to try for themselves.

The roof terrace is not very small and can seat at least 40-50 people.

Trustworthy they may be, but what some loath, others love. I would give it a go, then cast your own vote. :up or :td

On five tables of four? 6 at a pinch.

It is a space that is not appropriate for amplifiers, mixing decks and loud music. But chaque'un a son gout.

Well there were about 15 of us there the other night Brian and still lots of room left, other tables were occupied by other diners.
Belly dancing etc. is not exactly my idea of a pleasant evening out but each to there own, I hope it goes well.

Yes, Carrie, we occupied three tables, room for six ladies at each, enjoying delicious food, and the end of the tables were free. There were at least four other tables there.

Won't hear it were I live thank goodness, had a few noisy nights recently, what with weddings and parties for this that and the other. The oly thing I find is they do not know where the volume know is to turn it down to an acceptability for their neighbours.

They may not want to change their lifestyle in order to be accepted by their foreign neighbours.

I am reminded of the quote from the article about why the Thai government is cracking down on visas:
“Thai culture is very accommodating. However the things many farang do here can be considered ignorant and even rude.”

My source gave the example of loud music often played by neighbours during the day or night. This generally presents little or no problem for a Thai, but some foreigners make complaints about these issues which are culturally acceptable in Thailand. He said that many farangs expect the same cultural standards here in Thailand as they have within their home countries.
