Post by Binti » Fri Apr 17, 2009 6:00 pm

Have you ever got yourself in a sticky situ speaking arabic or misunderstanding something said to you in arabic?

my 1st mistake was going into a shop to ask for bleach to clean my bathroom....the man kept repeating *bleach bleach* I later found out that BLEACH is furniture polish CLOR is bleach!!

Dont ever say *MORNING* in Arabic the wrong way ;-)

 You know i have many, im sure i have posted them before...

The Bleach one is funny, a lad who did our satellite had streaks of like blond in is hair, i kept pointing at it and saying Bleach ? Bleach ?, he kept saying No.. No... He must have thought i was round the bend

Fackar (sp?) which was said to me on one of the local minibuses near Karnak, WHO ME ???? I created a scene in which me and the driver ended up off the bus shouting at each other, after around 100 Egyptians gathered round to watch the scene a man told me it meant CHANGE

Another one where i nearly blew was MaFuck meaning screwdriver...

I know the Morning one is aimed at me Binti

So i will reveal all...

I said to the cleaner in front of all his family...

Hanna Shoof Enter Bukra Zob (something similar to that, though a bit longer) I meant to say I will see you tommorow morning) what i actually said was
Spoiler
Show
I will see your Cock tommorow morning.....

Zop - meaning Morning - Zob - meaning cock, Im sure it is my Yorkshire Accent, i just cant say zop :( so i miss the morning word out now

I was once watching TV with some egyptians in cairo and there was a programme about zebras so i was saying "zebras!" as you do and had everyone in an uproar .......same word as keefy (zobras  ) you live and learn
I think you wanted to say "early"? which is soab ...very similar :)

Another booboo I made was saying "sit down" - which is like "cursy" but sounds very like a part of the female anatomy which is "cussy" took a long time to live that one down!! but never made same mistake twice
I don't have a plan......so nothing can go wrong!

 Missed this one first time round!

In the presence of the whole family recently I said to DH 'oh, you tease!'....the whole room fell silent whilst it dawned on me what the translation is...(literally, 'you @rse'! ).
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...
