How to say - dangerous egg allergies

Post by Len » Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:02 pm

My wife has dangerous egg allergies. Just to give you an example - last week we ate out for breakfast. She ordered some sausage and immediately after eating it felt sick. The rest of the day she spent in the bathroom. She knew that the sausage had been grilled just after making some eggs.

I need to know how to say "NO EGGS" in Arabic or can anyone tell me how to relate to a waiter that she can not have anything with eggs in it?

Hi Len

You could say 'al bayd memnoah alayha' (eggs are forbidden for her) or 'al bayd bi tab-eh-ha halas' (eggs make her very unwell).

Hope this is of some help!

Gosh! I never knew you could be allergic to eggs. That must be awful for her, Len.

Wishing her a trouble free holiday :)

If your wife's allergy is really as bad as it sounds, I doubt whether saying 'no eggs' is going to solve the problem. They may understand that she does not want to eat any eggs but I doubt if that understanding will extend to all the other food stuffs that may contain eggs or have been in contact with them in any way, I am thinking off say, ice creams, noodles, pasta, sauces, cakes etc.

Eeeek! Horus has a very valid point... your wife is going to have to be super-vigilant - food allergies to things like nuts and eggs isn't really understood by most of the restaurants here.

I can ask my husband to write something for you in Arabic to print out and show to the people in the restaurants. He's a doctor and I am sure he can think of a way to write it that would be understood. Just PM me with the details of her problem and I will ask him for you.

Glyphdoctor,

Nicole,

Thank you very much for your offer!

My wife is writing something and will pm you.

I noticed that you are in Cairo. Do you know where 3 El Adel Abou Bakr St is? Or, do you know of a web site which shows the street names in Cairo? All of the maps I have found are not that detailed.

Again - thanks,

Len

You are looking for the SCA headquarters in Zamalek. If you are trying to get there by taxi, the best thing to do is to ask for the Umm Kolsum Hotel, and then walk inland from the Nile in the street to the south of the hotel. It's 1 or 2 blocks in on the right side, a 6 story building with a wide set of steps in the front and a gift shop on the right of the entrance. Google Earth has street maps of Cairo but the problem is they are all shifted slightly from their proper place. I have complained but they haven't fixed it yet. If you use Google Maps you can shut off the satellite image and the maps become clearer.
