Pigeon!
Question here for our delectable Who2.
The master of culinary arts.
What type of pigeons do Egyptians eat?
Is it considered a delicacy?
I once went out for dinner with an Egyptian man.He ordered pigeon. It came stuffed with rice, etc
He descended upon the plate like a vulture!Digging his spoon in,cracking bones, etc.
It actually looked a very sparse plate if I'm honest!A tiny little morsel!
He asked why I didn't choose it from the menu.I explained that in Scotland, pigeons are regarded the same way as vermin is.They're scavengers! It kinda fell on deaf ears.. and he was further horrified to discover that we eat pork!!
We eat "birds" of many types,chicken,ducks,capons,bantams,etc...but we don't tend to eat pigeon!
Nor seagull!Someone once told me that seagulls are "full"of acid and are unpalatable. Is that true?
What has been most unusual thing that you've ever eaten?

Re: Pigeon!
An Egyptian pigeon stuffed with rice has very little meat to eat on it, mainly it serves as flavoring for the rice inside.
Just like a turkey, where the stuffing is the best part.

Re: Pigeon!
I eat pigeon in Egypt and in England. The Egyptian one has very little meat. it is a farmed animal just like chicken, duck or rabbit. In England the wild pigeon is a bit larget and one per head is sufficient but in Egypt a portion tends to be two birds.

Re: Pigeon!
I've eaten pigeon in Egypt and it was super tasty.
I've eaten most every kind of wild game meat available here - bear, raccoon, moose, elk, deer, cougar, seal, sea lion, wolf etc. Years ago whenever an animal had to be put down the Conservation guys kept the meat and once a year, usually towards Christmas, a dinner would be put on for the entire town to sample all the different 'meats' that had been caught during the year. Bear is strong and somewhat greasy, seal and sea lion is nothing but grease.
Probably the most delicate tasty meat I've ever eaten was iguana.

Re: Pigeon!
So..what is the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?
I know that certain animal's testicles are considered a delicacy in other countries.
Have you ever eaten them?
Sheep balls,dogs ********,bulls testicles?Prairie oysters?
My lovely little Scottish papa was once served a full kipper for breakfast in a B&B in Isle of Man.
The head and tail hadn't been cut off.So..he ate the lot!!Fish head, eyes and everything else!
Waste not and want not!
I just love venison..but it's very expensive here.
Notice though that some freezer shops are selling ostrich and even alligator!
Has anyone tried these dishes?
Would you recommend them?

Re: Pigeon!
Some of our stores here sell horse meat. Often there is lots of outcry from the Animal Rights people about this. Quite often the heads and feet are left on the fowl when they're in the stores. Usually grosses out some of the tourists. Most often fish are sold whole here too - heads, eyes, tails.......

The most unusual food that I have ever eaten is a decent meal served up in one of Luxor's expat restaurants.

Re: Pigeon!
The sheer cruelty & barbarism involved in the raising of animals & birds for human consumption should turn the stomach of any decent person.
That it doesn't....and that we can turn a blind eye to the obvious....says a lot about modern society.

Re: Pigeon!
The strangest thing I have eaten is calamari,
and it was like chewing on one of those things that held soap to the wall in your bathroom back in the 70's...
How on earth did someone looked at an octopus and thought, "Mmmm, that looks tasty"...
I did endulge in some venison when I was in Ljubljana the other day...

Re: Pigeon!
Wood Pigeon is very nice. Loads of them round here, and have probably 6 times more meat than those pigeons in Egypt.
The taste ? a stronger chicken taste than chicken, and the meat is slightly redish.
City Pigeon I would probably not touch, unless I was desperate, and they have less meat on them.
At least with Wood Pigeon, they have eaten all natural food, and live in a natural environment.
There is a restaurant in Ellesmere Port that sells various meats, including African Game, I have tried crocodile, Springbok, ostrich, Kudu..

I did try Kangaroo meat that was prepared as a burger, cant say I ever want to eat that again..
Oh, and Rabbit and cider Pie at a friends house, that was lovely..

Re: Pigeon!
The Samos. a Greek restaurant in Hurghada very close to Bombay's place, does camel three ways. I have eaten camel in Luxor and it has been fairly fatty and gristly as it was not well prepared. The Camel fillet steak and the Schish Camel were excellent, and Samos also do a burger. Their Greek food also looks good, so I will try it next time I am there.
I've eaten most of the delicacies mentioned earlier in the thread. Some, such as Calamari, need precise cooking but are delicious. Others, such as bull's testicles, were a bit tough. Maybe I caught the bull on a bad day, like just after it had lost a bullfight?
Ostrich, Kangaroo, etc., are very lean and the better cuts compare to a good fillet steak. Most of the food that I've eaten and not enjoyed has been vegetarian.

What's "head cheese"LLL?LovelyLadyLux wrote:

In Scotland we sometimes eat "potted hough!"
It's absolutely delicious!
It's sheep brain, pulled from the skull, boiled and preserved in aspic!
We would spread it on toast, smear it over potatoes, etc.
Is "head cheese"the same thing?

Re: Pigeon!
@ST - headcheese is boiled pig head. Boil in water with vinegar & salt until the brine is reduced down so that it sets as a jelly when cold. It has bits of meat and pieces in it so can be cut and sliced before eaten cold.

Re: Pigeon!
@BM - yeah nothing like walking into the kitchen as a kid seeing ears and snout poking up outta a big pot boiling away and steaming up the kitchen. Spices for flavor were added though and it actually tasted much better than it sounds. One pig head actually made gallons of the stuff too so we all ate it for weeks if not months after it was made.

Re: Pigeon!
Eeew...makes me so glad I am a vegan! They do say you become what you eat.
There are many diseases caught from eating meat, especially " offal" and parasites such as pin worms, tapeworms, Trichinosis, (worms that live in your muscles) infections such as Brucellosis, Tularemia, E Coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and many more.
The Ebola virus originates from eating " bush meat".
Many neurological conditions arise from meat such as jacob creudfeldz disease, B.S.E. ( Bovine spongeiform encephalitis) as well as bowel disease, cancer, heart disease and high cholestetol,
http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/ca ... ction.html
I was vegetarian for many years before finally becoming vegan....and feel so much better - skin, hair, much better, I feel lighter and cleaner somehow, and can run much easier and further these days. I never get colds or catarrh ( as I used to with milk and dairy) and my achey joints are cured! I am however totally addicted to fruit...today for example after my afternoon run I had 2 pineapples, 4 kiwi fruits, blueberries and grapes! For breakfast I had a fruit and veg juice ....5 a day! Pffft

Re: Pigeon!
If meat is hygienically produced and thoroughly cooked it will be disease free.
I didn't eat them, but I had free range pigs to clear the creeping thistle and other weeds on my organic land in UK.
However I did cook for others - I tried to cook brawn just the once..............
The recipe said "soak the halved heads in water" ........OK
Then remove the eyes and the teeth................
I had white pig with black pigment (haha) round her eyes, known as Black Eyed Susan.
When I looked in the pot I saw Susan looking back.........
No brawn, ever.
