75 sentenced to death.

Post by Major Thom » Sun Sep 09, 2018 6:25 am

After a long drawn out event 75 people have been sentenced to death by the Egyptian Courts for protesting in the 2013 uprising. But it's very much like the World News say's not one security officer was charged. Could this be the tipping point for the future?

More like "same old, same old"

Once again Egypt hits the headlines and BBC news for all the wrong reasons.....but who cares. It'll all be forgotten in a day or so as some new atrocity fills our screens.

My guess is Idlib. :(

So is it true or not true or not true Newc. You make it sound like its nothing, and everyday occurrence that gets forgotten around the World the next day. As long as Reuters are about, and International News Channels are about it will be a lot longer than a day. CNN did a half hour program on this, so they do not consider it to be small news.

Of course it's true although whether any executions take place we'll have to see. I believe Egypt has already executed over 20 "terrorists" in recent years.

And terrorists is how these convicted MB supporters are viewed by much of the public here...so don't expect any widespread condemnation of the sentences locally.

Worldwide, particularly in the West and from organisations like Amnesty International. there will be the usual condemnation of a flawed trial process etc but it would be naive to expect the issue to be taken up at government level.

Nor will it impact on tourism. By and large sun-seekers don't give a damn about the politics of the country on whose beaches they descend.

And the press will soon move on.

Well CNN News will stick by Egypt their weather bulletins are sponsored by Egyptian Tourism. (Maybe that's why they are only 10 secs long)

The organisation that seems to stick to Egypt through thick & thin is the BBC. Although I'm usually dismissive of conspiracy theories. I'm beginning to think there's someone high up in their news department who has an axe to grind. There's been a veritable torrent of negative articles over the last 2 years - culminating in the infamous program highlighting alleged disappearances.

Yesterday, several minutes were devoted to an obscure travel firm - outofoffice.com - who specialise in researching & arranging trips to LGBT friendly destinations.

Nice publicity for the firm.

And...needless to say...the program mentioned the reason the young entrepreneur set up the outfit - a bad experience he and his ex-boyfriend had in Egypt. Apparently one hotel refused them access.

Egypt doesn't figure on the list of destinations they promote.

Curiously, the Maldives does....although the island state specifically criminalises ANY homosexual behaviour.
