Human Rights Aggreement Suspended

Post by Major Thom »

it has just been announced that Turkey has temporarily suspended its Human Rights Agreement. Is this the start of a Police/Military run Country, governed by oppression? And still European Holiday Companies are selling Holidays to Turkey! Can this be called Customer Care?

Hmmm, France has been in a State of Emergency for several months, and it too has suspended the Human Rights Agreement. I don't see you commenting on this? You clearly have no grasp at all of the situation in Turkey, but no surprise there.

The two go hand in hand.....for reasons too obvious to require explanation.

In my experience the nature of the ruling regime of any country, its adherence to human rights law etc. , has little effect on the number of tourists visiting. They are there on holiday...not to engage in a critique of government policy.

The level of open violence, perceived physical danger, may affect tourism.

The fact that the government keeps a firm hand on the throats of any opposition, that free speech is just a couple of words, that those crossing the line may be 'disappeared', tortured or killed......none of this impacts on the average holidaymaker, acquiring a nice tan on the beach of a 5 star resort.

Answer : Millions. Spain experienced a huge boom in tourism in the 1960s.

They certainly did at £36 a fortnight. Regarding France and Turkey, I see no oppression being used, in the same way the Pressie of Turkey is using to keep himself in power, maybe he would have been better going for an election in the circumstances.

According to the news, the number of those detained is 60,000 with the deputy P.M calling for many more. Wonder where they are putting them?

There of course is another difference regarding an earlier post on suspension of human rights being applied in France has well as Turkey, France is not trying to reinstall the death sentence, a draconian, inhumane, act that belongs to the age of 60 years ago.

The imposition of the death penalty does not, per se, contravene international treaties concerning human rights.

Many signatories to the UNCHR still have the death penalty on their statutes (USA, China....Egypt etc. )

Stoning would be regarded as as a cruel and unusual form of execution...although not actually prohibited under international law.

Probably send them to Germany where they will be welcomed by Merkel

In my early years I regularly got stoned, survived OK although at times I did wish for death.

The problem I foresee in Turkey is that people will get executed for crimes that do not carry the death penalty, or they will just disappear never to be seen again, until their bones are dug up by the "Time Team" this is a regular occurrence from dictators using oppression to run a Country, and I fear that is what Hurdy Gurdy will do.
