ISIS calls for more attacks in Egypt

Post by DJKeefy »

Islamic State in Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) called on Monday for more raids in Egypt, praising the operations against “the soldiers of Al-Sisi” in Sinai and urges militants to “continue on this path”, in a statement by spokesperson Shaykh Mohamad Al-Adnani Al-Shami titled “Indeed Your Lord is Ever Watchful”.

Al-Shami encouraged militants in Egypt to “rig the roads with explosives for them. Attack their bases. Raid their homes. Cut off their heads. Do not let them feel secure. Hunt them wherever they may be. Turn their worldly life into fear and fire. Remove their families from their homes and thereafter blowup their homes.”

Egypt has pledged to support the US coalition that President Barack Obama called for to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the threat of ISIS.

During the international conference held in Paris to discuss ways to support the new Iraqi government against the threat of ISIS, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said this phenomenon requires “comprehensive confrontation”. He added that dealing effectively with the threat of ISIS necessitates dealing with the political and cultural dimensions that led to its spread.

US Secretary Department of State John Kerry visited Egypt among other countries in the region to ask them to join in the coalition. In a press conference in Egypt, Kerry said that although ISIS fights using the name of Islam, it has nothing to do the religion and it is clear that the group is based on hatred which is condemned by Muslims all over the world.

The US coalition is backed by nearly 40 countries that have agreed to contribute to the fight against ISIS, providing training and equipment, humanitarian relief and flying combat missions.

ISIS stated that it will not be defeated as Obama promised. Al-Shami also said that ISIS didn’t initiate the war and that Europeans and Americans “started the transgression” against them.

Who in Egypt do you think is most vulnerable? The Christians in Egypt? Expats? Soldiers? Politicians?

Not sure what you mean by vulnerable, but if you are asking about likely targets: Soldiers in Sinai. Police everywhere else. But it has been like that for a long while before IS became a big deal.

Well, be it for me to say, I suspect it is tourists, who will be staying at hotels, in Egypt. Ex-pats, it can be said, should be fully aware of the local situation, and therefore little regard will be given internationally, however an international tourist MUST act upon its Foreign Office recommendations.

I must admit that, although my first Winter visit to Egypt will be soon, for the very first time I am a little nervous of the security in Cairo and Luxor.

I wrote some time ago now, that the Middle East will become a 'back water' in the future, where as we are already seeing that there is less need for oil, especially from the U.S.A. Then, when we realise that the Arabs are more tribal than the Central African nations, without mentioning the present war within Islam itself, we can perhaps see the regions downfall develop before our own eyes. Less real news of the region will come forward, simply because journalist will not risk their lives.

All this sounds very crazy I know, but then again, it's less crazy than building a new Suez Canal, at a crazy price, when traffic through the present canal is in decline. It is the Panama Canal that will be the future.

The U.S.A.'s West will be India, and more importantly China, and perhaps Japan, though it's future is far from certain, as is Europe, the U.S.'s East, where it seems they are still fighting the Cold War, rather than forming trade alliances, with mother Russia, rather than the carpet bagger states.

So,what future for Egypt ?

Everyone everywhere is vulnerable, but like Glyph said I think the attacks on the soldiers in the Sinai will no doubt continue.

Yes, but that don't get international headlines, where Britain and the U.S., do not pay ransoms, so the murder of their national ensures the full publicity, hence they give long warnings of what they intend to do with their captives.

This morning ISIS made a specific threat against Canada saying they are coming to our small towns and cities, grabbing local regular citizens and will then conduct a public beheading. They said in their message they do not want us to be scared they want us to be terrified.

I think soldiers could be targets but they're also likely to have the means to fight back (at least you'd think they'd have the means to fight back) while a local politician, Expat, Manager of a store etc would not fight back and could be easily overtaken meaning easy victims to for the ISIS types to grab.

Also apparently (as per TV News) ISIS has recruited something like 30 Canadians as fighters for them. Our gov't is busy running around and invalidating their passports (That will DEFINITELY scare the ISIS fighters! NOT!!)

And this threat here was very specific too-directed at the "soldiers of al-Sisi". There is no indication that tourists are targets at this point, Not saying that this isn't within the realm of possibilities, but this warning made it pretty clear who the target is and it isn't tourists specifically. Sky News and Daily Mail have spun it differently because a lot of the attacks have been in North SINAI and the tourist resorts are in South SINAI even though they are some distance apart but that I think is an exaggeration and sensationalization.

Airstrikes began tonight in Syria with Tomahawk missiles targeting command and control sites. Stealth bombers flying and an F22 Raptor which is being used 1st time.

UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi for the first time have aligned with the USA.

None of it sounds good but IMO ever since President O drew a red line and then did nothing ISIS started to really plan and prepare and up the ante.

Why is Turkey not participating? They're right on the border and really close to the fighting ........ ???

First of all they [ISIS] would have to infiltrate the country. Creating a network of operatives that would be easy to link up with various command points. If they were to target tourists or expats, which I consider to be a pretty naff suggestion within Egypt's territory, they then would have to have a clear way out into their more secure territory's with their captives before they can start making demands. They could of course just go in for a sudden kill, sacrificing their own lives to make the point that nowhere is safe. But I think, giving the lay of the land, not as open and deserted as with the other countries they inhabit, they will stick to more easy available targets, like the desert boarders as they do now with the odd cowardly placed bomb.

I think that they now drastically underestimate their prowess on the battlefield now that the coalition has been formed. Annihilation of their numbers will come sooner than later for them. Not all want to be martyrs, some just want to fire a gun at easy targets, cut peoples heads off and receive tax free lumps of money for doing so. I think that there will soon be many Olympic standard marathon runners.

They make the call for all their supporters to hit us hard internally, which suggests to me that they know that they themselves can not do the job internally. As in any country, there will always be factions and idiots that truly believe that to fight the cause of ISIS will bring them martyrdom. So everyone has to be vigilant on a day to day basis, which we have been doing anyway since the MB's attempted reign of terror.

Egypt has a strong Army and good weaponry, thanks to the likes of the US, so are quite able to counter any or most threats. It would be pleasing to see that this latest development would increase the security in the likes of Luxor, seeing the return of the many armed police and Army check points of days gone by when there was no real conceivable or foreseeable threat.

On a lighter not, you do not have to have any feelings of trepidation A-four concerning you upcoming visit, that is for us expats to have in case we bump into you on the streets. :D

@ Dusak - I think on some of your points you're rather naïve. I highly doubt ISIS has plans to infiltrate the country - Psssst - they are ALREADY THERE and have already identified those they can count on who will provide areas that will be secure and safe. ISIS has been recruiting all over the world and attracting all level of crazies, psychopaths, sociopaths and criminally insane.

You're right they want easy targets which makes old and gimpy Expats who are not moving fast pretty reasonable to grab and lopping somebodies head off in the tourist Souk would make a headlines and all they're interested in ARE headlines and creating terror.

Egypt may have a strong Army however the US military beats them out all to heck but that still hasn't stopped ISIS from whacking the heads off a couple of 'Mericans cause the Army isn't exactly assigned to protect civilians on a one to one. Am not sure but I highly doubt the Egyptian Army is so assigned either so should ISIS make an appearance you're pretty much up to your eyeballs in deep do do as far as expecting protection.

Personally I think grabbing a few Expats in Luxor would be super easy to do and would make a pretty big BANG with the public. Would definitely put a bullet in the head of tourism which would create far worse economic conditions than there are there now.

LLL-I'd say in this case you are the naive one. I think if anyone wants to kill SOMEONE anywhere in the world, at any time, it is easy to do, as long as you choose the right weapon to do it. It's only a matter of self-control.

However, you really underestimate the surveillance capabilities and activities of the Egyptian security services, especially when it comes to foreigners. I would say from things that I know that it really is possible for them to know more about you than you know about yourself in some respects.

Of course you and anyone else has the right to say that I am naive, but when you have lived here for as long as I have you gain a better understanding of the country and its capabilities. I have the fullest of confidence in Egypt's capabilities in keeping ISIS out, or at least controlling and monitoring their movements. Making contact via the internet and mobile phones is not infiltration of the country, driving around in pick-ups with mounted heavy weaponry is infiltration in my view. Unfortunately, ''whacking the heads off'' as you so eloquently put it, is not a thing that you can control or prevent, given the thousands of square miles they have to commit such deeds. And I have to say, that if I where of the mind to do voluntary work oversees, I would choose someplace like the Isle Of Man. Not a country full of terrorists that are just waiting for such stupid folk to come over still wearing their blinkers.

Maybe it is perception but I see ISIS as a fanatical group of psychopaths who have hijacked religion to meet their perverted vision of whatever it is they see and envision. They've gone high profile real fast given their barbaric acts. They've also made sure their message has been heard loud and clear and they've articulated clearly about what they want done to the infidel (aka US).

I'm quite confident law enforcement and military people are very skilled in all the techniques they use to track the crazies - the KNOWN crazies however what I see happening is there are lots of disgruntled young men who 'wanna be' and one of the things that would gain them notoriety, praise, recruitment opportunities into ISIS would be to act in accord with what ISIS has proclaimed all over social media it wants. It wants non-believers (us) to be basically wiped out.

I think that these young men are basically unknown to the powers that be, will act of their own accord and will fulfill ISIS what wishes in the manner ISIS has requested these acts be carried out.

It isn't that the military and law enforcement aren't skilled it is that ISIS is recruiting and encouraging converts to commit heinous acts. WHY anybody would ever want to convert and become a member of a group like ISIS is beyond me but they do have mega converts and I think it will be some of these who are radicalized who will commit solo barbaric acts. Al Baghdadi isn't going to come to Luxor. All security eyes of the world are on him as best they can be however one of his unknown wannabes might (come to Luxor or some other relatively quiet place) and act. They won't necessarily be in the mainstream but will rather act opportunistically and where it is easy to strike unprepared targets who are unlikely to fight back.

Personally, I was not talking about tracking terrorists but protecting/watching foreigners.

I'll give just one example, although this one was many years ago before all the technology even existed that makes things a lot easier. I had a colleague who I think was checking out potential excavation sites in various remote parts of the country. He knew he was being discretely watched by the police everywhere he went, but what came as a surprise to him was as he was waiting at the airport in Cairo to go back home, some strange man came up to him, tapped him on his shoulder, and said, "Dr. Williams, your plane is leaving. Go now or you will miss it." They were watching out for him all the way to the time he left. They knew his plane was about to depart even when he didn't realize it himself!

Some nationalities may get more attention than others but try traveling around with a sizable group of Americans or mostly Americans and see if you can do it without some sort of police escort in a lot of places. The policies differ governorate by governorate, and their mandate also normally stops at the border between governorates and you can find yourself waiting in the middle of nowhere waiting for your next police escort, unless you specifically request in advance someone to accompany you the whole way, but they watch out for certain groups like hawks.

In the good old days, pre-revolution, you had the traffic police, the tourist police, the local police, they basically being old men nearing retirement that inhabited various street corners especially in and around the original tourist souk, and then the army. We only basically have the tourist police now. The local police in their dirty grime covered black uniforms have disappeared. The so called traffic police are usually wearing tourist police uniforms and now and again some army personnel leave their appointed positions to help them out. But one group that numbered hundreds on the streets were the so called secret police in civilian clothes. They were everywhere. Keeping an eye on the population as a whole, tourists and expats included. I think the vast majority of these have been disbanded, being part of Mubarak's crew. But it was still a comforting thought that they where there, watching. No doubt there are still some knocking about, but not as easily distinguished from the normal foot traffic wallers as was the case in the past.

I did once enjoy the company of one of the plain clothes policeman on my way back to the Jollie Ville in my Taxi.
I twigged instantly when my chosen taxi driver did not complain when I was ushered to another another Taxi..... That was facing the wrong way !!!
This man also got to ride in the back all the way into the Jollie Ville compound, which then confirmed my suspicion.
The only reason I can think of is the person who I had visited earlier was being watched... :tk
There's a time for everyone, if they only learn

I am also comforted, like I am sure EVERYONE on this site is that you are cared for, like all the other ex-pats, who still remain in Luxor, and although a dear person who lives in Asswan informed me, that the authorities will be glad when all of you have moved on, I do not believe that statement for one moment.

Further more, I do not believe for one moment either, that every ex-pat and regular tourist to Luxor has a file in the local office of the new Amdowla, though I suspect some of you there believe this to be so.

I am certain like most natives of Luxor and Karnack they enjoyed and appreciated the presence of the old Amdowla, like they do now with the care, comfort and peace of mind that these dear officers have ALWAYS been held in the highest regard. It is also to your credit that you know of these facts so well.

I certainly look forward to their protection during my future visit.
