Minister says attended experiments of AIDS-curing device.

Post by DJKeefy »

Health Minister says attended experiments of AIDS-curing device three years ago.

Health Minister Adel al-Adawy said he attended some of the experiments three years ago on the invention of far-fetched “Complete Cure” device, which was declared by the armed forces to be able to detect and treat AIDS and Hepatitis C.

He added that rate of accuracy of the diagnosis reaches 95 percent and that using it at hospitals will benefit patients. In addition, using it at blood banks, external clinics will reduce infection with the two viruses.

The device, which is composed of a small handle attached to a long antenna, has been heavily criticized, not only for the improbability of curing disease, but also because it has not gone through any of the proper scientific channels before the army began to laud its success.

Presidential Scientific Adviser Essam Heggy said the device was a “scandal” and could be an embarrassment for the military. He stressed the need for Egyptian scientific institutions to stick to international standards of scientific research, publishing and production ahead of declaring results reached.

Speaking to a talk show aired on the privately-owned TV channel MBC Masr, Adawy said the device was patented and that some agencies said it was proven to be able to treat, while others had reservations, though he did not divulge who.

“The ministry will not declare efficiency of the device, except after being tested,” he added indicating that he will declare its inefficiency if that was proven.

Once criticism emerged against the device, the doctor leading the team that invented the device, Major General Ibrahim Abdel Aaty, began to wrap the device in conspiracy theories, claiming that he was offered US$2 billion abroad to “forget” about the device. He also said Egyptian intelligence had to escort him safely back to Egypt.

The Economist reported that Abdel Aaty had appeared as a faither healer on satellite channels as well as been a private consultant in herbal medicine.

I read about this someplace, I don't think the use of a pair of scissors and a cork will prove very popular.

What is it about claiming to curing of AIDS by third world is characteristic of African autocracies with run down facilities that barely cover day to day needs. Its bound to cause skepticism. When a government is in a corner the alleged cure can be dragged out for a press conference. Moi of Kenya dragged it out a year or so before he was got rid of. A lot of Kenyan's believed part because they were stupid part out of patriotic feelings.

Who would believe this story. By admission it is 3 years old: so why hasn't it been rolled out or published in the Lancet. Is the Nobel in the mail. The statement that the Army have confirmed the scientists results is bizarre. What would the army know about experimental immunology, in fact who knows much about immunology in Egypt given that its world beating Hep C is alleged to result from contaminated needles used in an immunization program - think Shistiamosis (?). So their only big and uncomplicated immunology program ended ruining the lives of millions. The device can treat both AIDS and Hep C - well these chaps, and the Army, should get 2 Nobels.

Para 3 gets a bit confused (that old problem of lying - keep it consistent). The discovery is now stated to be a diagnostic device with accuracy in excess of 95%. Ignoring the problem of whether it is a cure or a test, the claim of 95% accuracy is a lot lower than actual and proven cheap western tests. This Egyptian claim is odd because any specialist would know that a 95% test was nothing special, only a fool not in medicine would say this. So we can assume that this press fiasco was probably engineered and scripted by a politician who didn't check his claims.

Para 4 is surrealism. Pan with an antenna and the role of the Army becomes clear. Convenient timing, close to the election, of a world breaking discovery by the Army. The failure to prove its efficacy is incomprehensible given the three years and the desperate needs. Again they also seem to have forgotten to write to the Lancet. This Minister is not deterred by a blast from the Presidents Office which makes you think that Government is not well co-ordinated but it is rather fiefdoms but at least the President's office knows quackery from science.

It gets crazier with faith healing, buckets of money but the interesting thing is that the Army has some type of medical research which might include Immunology. In a long post several years ago I listed all the businesses owned by the Army and drawn from published sources. Hospitals weren't in that list but a military hospital wouldn't be unusual for career officers who think themselves above the people. In this case it goes further than army hospital ownership because the demented doctor who invented the aerial spittoon is a major general. The idea of major general experimental scientists is a further example of how far the Army's reaches into civilian life. All though given his craziness he might do a bit of damage by friendly fire. Maybe the Army are so desperate they are prepares to hire the crook.

I imagine that the story will get some currency for similar reasons to those in Kenya - credulity and patriotism. For those with a subscription to the Lancet - don't hold your breath.

Given the quackery of the doctor major general wouldn't you expect that the peak Egyptian medical association would have deregistered him.
