Thinking of hotels...
Did the building, that I understand was supposed to become a hotel, on the roundabout beyond the Winter Palace and approaching 'Little Britain', ever get completed and occupied?

No, there are 3 quite large hotels in that area that were started a few years ago, they do a small amount of work on them now and again, then stop for another year or two.The large one on the roundabout only has my bank on the ground floor, the rest is a shell.

Thanks Dusak.

I doubt they will ever be needed as hotels, so it will be intersting to see what they do eventually become. If they are ever completed of course.

Years ago there was so much optimism in Luxor, tourists were flooding in. Hotels were going to expand, the Sonesta bought the pool at the side of the hotel so that they could build and enlarge the hotel, Four Seasons were going to open an hotel near the then, Novotel.
Stan and I had a conversation with the owners of the St Joseph hotel who were convinced that their hotel was to be demolished due to the widening of Khaled Ibn El Whaleed St.
They said they had bought that plot you described Hepzibah and were going to build a new hotel, an up market new St Joseph hotel.
Then came the Mubarak revolution, tourist numbers fell drastically and then Morsi was elected.
Copts were very nervous and many who could left. Expansion plans went by the board.
Were once they weren't enough hotel rooms hoteliers found that now there were too many.
The decline has continued.

Egypt has certainly had a tough decade since the revolution of 2011.

One disaster after another....terrorists, plane crashes....and now coronavirus.

You have to admire their eternal optimism. Perhaps there’s something to be said for a total belief in an omnipotent deity who has our best interests at heart and will see that all ends well.

Unfortunately, try as I may, the absurdity of the proposition keeps me firmly atheistic.

Or to simplify the phrase

"belief in an omnipotent deity who has our best interests at heart and will see that all ends well."

In one word.

Hope....

Alan Watts described Hope as the beggars choice..

Dichotomy... 🤔

Perhaps that's why proper beggars seem to rarely commit suicide?

I understand the concept of “hope” ....although I feel it’s often misplaced ( people who hope that Egypt will revert to “green” for example).

It’s blind faith I can’t get my mind round. More’s the pity ....I imagine it must be useful at times.

Indeed. Blind faith isn't a good idea.
But you get indoctrinated into those ideals from the day you were born. Would your parents lie to you. ? 🤔

The religion you follow is dependent upon the geographical location of your birth.

Until you begin to think for yourself and question the plausability of it all.

Meh, it is what it is. No one gets out of this game alive anyway. Sone of us are trying though. 😎

I've always been an optimist concerning a myriad of things, but as to Egypt's economical recovery in regards to tourism as to what it was before the revolution, I can not see it happening. I can only speak of Luxor, which now is a very pail shadow of what it used to be, enthusiasm exists on the streets that things will soon return to normal, which is a normal reaction in any crisis, but Luxor, it will need much more than a total blood transfusion and help from a none existent Deity. Maybe a few grounded ships in the canal every week will offset the lost tourist revenue.

Non-existent deity. They should return to Aten, after all its Sun worship that attracts tourists.

Allah Who? Akbar.

I was thinking of the Greek goddess of hope, Elpis.
