How can I find which tombs are open?

Post by ZesCedric » Sat Feb 23, 2019 3:35 pm

Hi, I shall be visiting Luxor in November 2019. So plenty of time for preperation.
How can I find which tombs are open?
It would be good to read up on the images on the walls of the open tombs before I go.
TIA,
Leslie

This is most definitely not my field of knowledge, but I think that there is some rotation on the tomb openings. Which tombs are open at any given time isn't always known far, if at all, in advance.

I'm sure someone else will be able to answer your question more specifically before long.

Hello ZesCsdric, difficult problem I note your future visit will be in November, others may tell you what is open now, though in truth this may be quite different in the future. As a rule, there is usually at least one tomb from each Of the three Dynasties at any one time.

My best tip for you is to read up on the King's Valley, and then make a note on the several tombs that you think will best please you, then you will not be too disappointed when you discover some tombs are closed. The best book for this subject, in my opinion, is The Complete Valley of the Kings by Nick Reeves and Richard Wilkinsons, available at most public libraries.

Perhaps the best guide to Egypt is The Rough Guide,...........less colour pictures, but far more facts.

On my trips, I've found it impossible to find out which royal tombs are open, with the exception of Nefetari - not to be missed despite the eye-watering ticket price - and Seti I. I do as A-Four suggests, have a mental list of tombs I've prepared for, and then go with the flow! In terms of interest, I much prefer the tombs of the Nobles, and the Assisif tombs, to the royal ones.

Thankyou A-four,
In that case I think I shall concentrate on the Myths that are most common in the tombs.
Starting with the Amduat, then Gates, Caverns, Earth, Day and Night......
I think that should take me to November.

As I suspected you have a keen interest in the state religion of the Pharaohs of the New Kingdom, the various divinities of the Amduat, Khekher-frieze, depictions of the Book of Gates, Book of Caverns, Book of the Earth, etc, etc. It is important to remember though that over the 500 years of the New Kingdom, priorities changed as did interpretations, that is why I suggested you visit the most important tomb (if possible) from each of the three dynasties.

The book I suggested above gives you careful details of each tomb in the King's Valley, and also information on each of the Pharaoh's twelve hour journey into the afterlife, and the position on where to find such details on a plan of each tomb.

Most all tombs are open at 'night time, it all depends on how much one wants to pay.
This is Egypt! 'all is possible... 8)

Thanks, I have ordered a copy of this book.
So far I have been working through: JC and CM Darnell Netherworld Books. I find it astounding, but does not contain the Hieroglyphics as does W Budge.
