More photos just up.

"The New River Ferry "Dendera 1" is coming from our 25-metre-long governorate, 15 meters, 75 tons, and 300 passengers."

Nothing like the previous pharaonic-style.

I've not seen the photograps yet. Let's be realistic, the last ferries were just badly decorated tug boats and the 'Pharonic' bling was soon gone...as were the tarpaulins and many of the nails/screws making the staircase and rails secure.

Well been over today and what I presume is the new ferry is tied up near the landing stage. New it's not, maybe new to Luxor but looks far from new. Twin hulled blue and looks very much like the old car ferry. Meanwhile the old ferries still plough their way across the Nile must admit though they have been swept recently.

You lucky people of today, the really old ferries, when the price was 10 pias, and if you were a woman it was only 5, but then again the reason why it was so cheap for them in the front of the boat, was because if the thing went down, the front would be first to go.

I know nothing really about river craft...but am wondering if the have gone to a catamaran style because the river is so low at the moment ( or at least was quite recently, don't know about now).

Looks to me Hepzibah like it was an old car ferry. Has ramps at either side of it that can be lowered to allow vehicles on board, hence I think the twin hulled design to make it more stable with vehicles on board. Wont work here because there are steps down to and off from the ferry, there doesn't seem to be any access to the ferry apart from when these ramps are down and they are too big to let down on the landing stage as it is now. We shall see at the moment the boat is tied up by the ferry and not actually in use.

Twin hulls give more stability, especially if overcrowded. :tk I wonder how long it will be before some one nicks the manhole covers.

This afternoon Carrie and I were fortunate enough to travel on the new ferry :urm: Short, but very steep ramp to get on and off, so anyone with mobility issues needs to be very careful, as I was. Not enough seats, much less than on the old ferries. We had to sit on the engine housing, so very noisy and stank of diesel. Many of the seats are new wooden benches, not fastened down, so unsafe. The price was the same. The crossing was faster but it took 4 times as long to manoeuvre to the landing stage.

We were NOT impressed!

Well the old "Pharonic"Ferries might have been old and shabby, dirty etc. but I would rather travel on one of those than the new ferry. Actually I think they are an insult.

My biggest worry , as stated before on another post, and the reason why I will not be using the ferries for the foreseeable future, is that when I boarded ( admittedly possibly at busiest time of day for the ferries), I really worried that the ferry was overloaded. There didnt seem to be any control whatsoever on the number of people piling on,and I felt crushed in a mob.
