Using Mifi?

Post by Yildez » Fri Jan 04, 2019 8:31 am

Anyone using a mifi in Luxor? A friend has offered to lend me one. Any advice re which sim to buy, how much credit I'll need for a month of general usage with no downloads but watching some UK TV through my VPN? Any info/suggestions appreciated!

Yildez, what is 'mifi'? Not something I am familiar with at all. (No surprises there - I'm still getting to grips with wi-fi.)

I'm not exactly sure myself Hepzibah :ni: :ni: But it seems to operate like a modem but with a SIM card that connects to the mobile phone signal. I'm not convinced it's going to work as it's a Turkish mobile phone company product, which I suspect is locked to their system. I'm checking with my friend as to whether he's used it outside Turkey. I bought a mifi unit from Vodafone in TV street approx cost 600LE. It's capable of 4G, but 4G in Egypt is not as fast as you wouls expect it to be especially at night when half the population of Luxor are on the internet. As to how much to use then I bought 30g worth and it lasted me a couple of weeks.

There are mifi sim free units available on eBay but whether they're compatable with Egypt's telecom system remains to be seen.

So is this like the dongle I use for my laptop when I'm in Egypt?
I got it from Vodaphone years ago - a USB stick with a sim card in it - and just refresh the credit whenever I'm in Egypt. This gives me good access to the internet wherever I've used my laptop in Luxor although I've not used it for TV use.

Yes, same principle Hepzibah, but stands alone, you dont plug it into your iPad. Crewmeal, thanks for the info, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's not worth the trouble of setting it up, as I'd be using it mainly in the evening!! It seems to be a non-starter :(

For a start your VPN will not work in Egypt as they have all been blocked by the Egyptian government for over a year now.

No. A dongle is like a USB stick you plug into a laptop. Mifi is a small box (router) that transmits wifi which is available for iPads iPhones Tablets etc. The sim card fits into to it and away you go.

I used 'Betternet' VPN last year and it worked well.

Nothing except a dongle plugs into your laptop for use on that only. A mifi (wifi) unit can be used for tablets phones laptops etc. usually allowing 4-5 devices to be used at the same time.

Our phone companies have a similar thing, it works fine throughout the EU Countries, would not work properly when we were in Iceland though and seemed to take up a lot of date even though we only tried using it there 2 or 3 times. Like a previous poster what it would be like in the Egypt system I would not know. The people that already have used this system in Egypt would be able to give the best advice, I can only comment on my experience on the system we had and being out of the EU Countries.

I find that using a dingle dangle wingle wangle (or DingWang) connected to my Woggle via a piggyback connection to a rooterbooter thus bypassing the dilithium crystals in my laptop is by far the simplest was to access the internet when holidaying in Egypt. :up

I think the only word I understood in all of that was 'Woggle', however I am left wondering why you'd connect your dingle dangle wingle wangle to your neckerchief holder/fastener.
