FREE WI-FI SERVICES TO BE IMPLEMENTED ACROSS ALL ANTIQUITIES SITES IN LUXOR

CAIROSCENE TEAM

Egypt has announced that it will install free Wi-Fi services across tourist and antiquities sites across Luxor, according to an announcement by the president of the Central Authority for Information and Telecommunications in Luxor, Ahmed Hammam.

Currently, the Karnak Temple, the Luxor Temple and the Temple of Hatshepsut in in the historic Upper Egyptian city have the service running.

Hammam added that this is part of the implementation of a protocol signed by the governorate of Luxor and the Egyptian Telecommunications Company in order to promote tourism. Furthermore, installing the service in other sites throughout the governorate is currently in coordination.

2018 has seen authorities make a concerted effort to improve facilities and services around touristic sites, with possibly the biggest news coming in the form of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities signing a deal with Orascom Investment Holding for the company to provide and manage a host of first-class facilities around the Great Pyramids of Giza.

I've got to ask... what real benefit to the tourist will this make? I'm obviously missing something here, as I can't really think of anything.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a scheme/proposal for Free Wi-Fi along the Corniche and Luxor Temple area a number of years back? Did that ever happen? I've only ever been able to use Wi-Fi when I've bought my own dongle, or used a cafe with it's own Wi-Fi.

Will make it easier to take photo's and send them from your Smartphone while still on site or, even use Facebook live, while looking around the Antiquities.   Like you Hepzi cannot see an advantage.

That is precisely the perceived advantage, i.e. so that visitors can promote Luxor and it’s antiquities through social media. Much cheaper than traditional marketing.

Maybe it would, but I do not know of many places where antiquities are on show that allow photography. So a few pictures of sand hills and broken buildings will not promote too much.

Free wi-fi ? I used to have to cross the Nile, have a draught Heineken beer in the New Winter Palace bar,
use their A/c & toilets and obviously their plug in internet.
