Docking In - Cruise Ships

Post by AladdinSane » Sun Jul 29, 2018 5:38 pm

Where do the cruise ships dock in these days? I seem to remember that the docking in berth/boarding zone was near a hotel (can't remember the name) but it wasn' t far from the St. Joseph and Murphy's pub. Is that still the case?

I recently read that the MS Commodore now docks in near the bridge on the out-skirts of the city - is that correct?

How much would a taxi cost from docking in bay to Karnak?

Bloody annoying, diesel belching things, full of cockroaches they should all be moored past the bridge.

Is the MS Commodore the only cruise ship that docks near the bridge?

I can’t say for certain nowadays maybe someone else can, but the mooring area would be used for their own Fleet namely Presidential Nile Cruises comprising of the Ritz Nile Cruise, Symphony Nile Cruise, Nile Plaza, Nile Odeyssey, Nile Admiral and the Nile Commodore and boats would be moored according to schedule. The Commodore sits somewhere in the middle with the Symphony at the top end, but the Commodore is (or was) a nice boat with excellent on-board food. As you may be aware the itineraries are pretty much identical to each other, but with boats such as the Commodore usually including a visit to Denderah (not all boats do that). There does seem to be a sort of pecking order when more than one boat is berthed at Aswan with the 5* boat occupying the landing stage area with the other boats in the fleet tied up adjacent so you pass from boat to boat, maybe they do it to show you the next level up class wise.

I remember about nine years ago, a group of us took a motorboat for a couple of hours trip up the Nile for a floating pick-nick. All of a sudden a cruse boat sailed past heading out towards Aswan, this was followed by twenty three other cruisers, we waving like fury towards the happy passengers, most with a sarnie in hand or a chicken leg. Those were the good old days, now, if I'm on the very top of my building, I can no longer remember the last time I saw a cruiser going up or down the Nile, but I can still remember the stench of the diesel engines as they continually 'ticked over' while berthed. The cruisers have now moved, but thankfully so has the stench and air pollution.

I have to say that I used to like seeing the boats all along the Corniche back in the day, they added something to the experience of visiting, but I also agree that the constant diesel fumes were an utter menace.

As far as I'm aware, virtually all of the ships now dock down by the bridge. Certainly the last couple I've been on have been, neither of which were in the Presidential fleet.

The exceptions are the really posh ones such as the MS Sudan, who're still allowed to dock in central Luxor.

As I said The Commodore is part of Presidential Cruises and they have their own docking facilities by the bridge and were the first to do so, others followed or were forced to move there.

Err...yes, I know you did.

Which is why I mentioned that the past two boats I've been on weren't Presidential ones but were also docked by the bridge.

And as I have also said, since they moved them from the Corniche they have all berthed out at the bridge with the odd exception you mentioned. My reference to Presidential Cruises is that the poster asked about the Commodore and I explained about them being the first in having their own berth out by the bridge.

Its a long time since I last drove past this new docking area, but what I do remember quite a few years ago is large tracks of land suddenly getting a new lease of life with the construction of new landing berths, coffee houses, quite a few taxi ranks, large grassed areas with tables and chairs, various buildings, security blocks and what have you, plus a few new builds on the opposite side, mainly coffee houses and what looked like trashy tourist tat sellers. Has this new area been completed, or just left abandoned?

I'm quite sure that the last nile cruise i did (2007) the boats docked in near a hotel - not far from the section of the city where Murphy's pub resides. Why don't they dock there anymore?

You probably mean near to the Sheraton, all the boats were moved to eliminate the pollution from their engines running all the time, at times you could not breath for the fumes along the Corniche, but I doubt its a problem nowadays. :(

Not sure how often you get out, no disrespect intended!

It's half that by the way. One way to Karnak from anywhere in Luxor town including any docking bays along the Corniche is nowadays between 35-45LE depending on whether you wish to give the extra 10. I do it almost every day. Until the 2 recent petrol price hikes, it was on average 25-30LE absolute max one way to Karnak from anywhere in Luxor.

Taxi drivers have never questioned the price I pay, in fact originally they were the ones who told me the correct price locals (as in Egyptians) pay.

The docking bays are very far from The Corniche.

Yes; that's correct The Sheraton; I remember now.

That sounds a reasonable price! I thought the docking bay was a very long way from Karnak and certainly a long distance from the centre of Luxor Town.
