Luxor - Via Hurgada

Post by AladdinSane »

I'm planning on visiting Luxor by flying to Hurghada and then bus to Luxor - July/August.

1) Anyone know of the cheapest return flights to Hurghada from Manchester?

2) Any pitfalls I may not have thought of - with regard to my plans?

Check that your incoming flight gives you enough time to catch the Hurghada-Luxor bus...or you'll have to stay in Hurghada overnight and travel the following morning.

Thanks for that. I may spend an evening in Hurghada and travel to Luxor early morning/early afternoon.

Any info on cheap flights would be welcome.

Depends what you call cheap. Expect to pay $850-$950 plus luggage return per person.

Don't forget that foreigners are not allowed to travel from Hurghada to Luxor and back during the hours of darkness. Have you looked at Pegasus Airlines, UK - Istanbul, Istanbul = Hurghada. Hotels in Hurghada are pretty cheap so an overnight stay there wont break the bank and an excellent taxi company (that Newcastle told me about) ABC does pick ups at the airport to your hotel.-

If you can find anything significantly cheaper, I'm sure AladdinSane would be delighted to hear from you.

It depends when you want to travel. Off season ie during school terms will be a lot cheaper than the summer hols. I priced out a Tommy Cook fare last year from Birmingham to Hurghada for a trip in the summer and there wasn't much difference between that and Egypair from London. By the time you've added all the extras on - seat choice, food, drinks and luggage etc you might think about Egyptair as they allow 2 x 23kgs for no extra charge.

Of course.

I doubt he'll find any way of reaching Hurghada, via a tolerable route from Manchester, for less than the $850-$950 I quoted.

Egyptair via Cairo is about the same. You can save a few quid by going via Jeddah

Sounded a bit expensive to me, but what do I know, nothing. My round trip to Thailand with 2x cases with all the taxes comes out £265 cheaper.

Well, since posting this reply I received my confirmation information e-mail and even after repeating my dates three times, the guy booked me a two month stay instead of one. No doubt I will be charged for their mistake which will cancel the above comment out. God I hate this place at times.

It is.....and a major disincentive for tourists from UK visiting Egypt.

The sheer cost is a lot more of a problem than any (alleged) security or hassle issues with regard to travelling to Egypt - at least as far as UK tourists are concerned.

I'll second that.

The price of air fares to Luxor are a major contributing factor in my choice not to return. There are many places around the world that interest me more and I can reach for a lot less money. There are also destinations that I had previously thought too expensive to fly to but when compared to Luxor tbese days, pro rata, are quite competative.

Ditto, when people are deciding to go on holiday flight costs come into it relative to where the destination is, lets be honest after the monuments Egypt has little else to offer. People will make return visits if it is cost effective and by that I don’t mean it has to be cheap, but when you can travel to other interesting places in the world for the same or even less money then the choice is obvious. Cruising is extremely popular nowadays and many people are opting for that all inclusive holiday with several interesting destinations to choose on each voyage and when you add everything together they are very competitively priced. Security is of some issue, but I doubt that it applies to most returning visitors who know the score, personally I don’t consider an expensive flight to a pretty run down destination with half empty hotels and lowered standards to be an attractive choice for a holiday, I could be attracted back with a decent extended Nile cruise (Cairo/Aswan) or if the new museums and the Avenue of Sphinxes were to turn out a success and not some half finished project.

I agree about the price of airfares but there seems to be more tourists here at the moment than I have seen for a long time and not those on a day trip from Hurghada.

Book into Dawar el Omda only 20 minutes from Hurghada airport at El Gouna http://elgouna.com/
They will arrange transport it's only £30 quid a night and a great place.
5 star, it's not really Egypt but will cost you about £45 quid to Luxor.

There may well be more tourists about at the moment, and that is good, but I doubt they are predominantly from the UK as Egypt has promoted itself better to other markets in recent years. I thought the comments were really referring to and comparing the price for travel from the UK.

Is this some sort of LGBT sex tour ? The only people I know who go there, are either on drugs or sex fiends.

Hurghada is obviously a beach holiday destination. Is it really more expensive to fly there from the UK in the school holidays than other beach destinations a similar distance away?

Genuine question, as I'm lucky enough to be able to never go on holiday when the brats are out of school.

I cannot believe how the prices have gone up, we are going to Cairns later in the year, and that is the same price (890 Dollars) that we are paying per person. When we flew to Iceland in February, our total return fare was 420 Dollars per person, why is it so expensive? I can see people turning to Budget Airlines for their holidays and using Booking.com for their hotels, and I don't think budget airlines fly to Luxor anymore, I know Easyjet stopped flying there before we left. Reading posts I thought they were trying to attract tourism, with these prices it will only attract hardened tourists, or those historians.
