Currency.

Post by jcoote » Fri Mar 30, 2018 11:28 am

Can anyone please tell me if there has been any change to any of the notes in circulation at the moment, i.e. new notes. I ask because when we came home last year and tried to exchange left over currency at one place, they would not accept our notes, stating that they were out of date, even though we had used them everywhere the day before in Luxor. The post office, however, had no problem in exchanging them for us.

The notes were changed a couple of years ago but the old notes are still legal tender in Egypt.

Few places in UK will change Egyptian currency nowadays and the exchange rate is very poor.

Agreed. I'm off to Luxor tomorrow and I'll change my sterling at the bank in Cairo. Hopefully the rate will still be aroiund the 24 to £1.

crewmeal, just a thought. If you get the time after your holiday, could you please let us know how you got on at Cairo with regards security, transfer etc., as we are doing the same route for the first time.

Is it possible to change 1 dollar bills in the banks? a few Egyptians who work on the cruise boats and sometimes get 1 dollar bills tips say the banks wont change them, only 5 dollar and upwards bills.

Seems a bit strange to why they would do this, any info to pass back to them will be appreciated. :)

The Egyptian Pound is virtually junk money and that is why you need to change it before coming back to the UK, other than that float it down the Nile. Most places in Egypt will change hard cash for Egyptian pounds. Before the Egyptian Pound collapsed many people knew what was going to happen and was offering better rate than the bank for US Dollars and Sterling, I even changed some Australian Dollars.

I have seen them changing $1 notes at the exchange house, but not in the banks.

Jcoote - When catching the 778 flight to Cairo and it’s not too delayed then the transfer is easy. After arrival at Cairo purchase your visa with a £20 note and change what money you want. Follow the signs to Domestic departures and go through immigration and security. Go upstairs and turn right for the MS60 flight. Last trip I was delayed by 90 mins but they still held the Luxor flight as there were so many connecting. However I’ll report back on today’s flight.

On the Cairo flight I find there are many connecting to other flights that have less time to get to their departure gate, so it’s in Egyptair’s interest to get everyone where they should be.

We had between 300 and 400LE when we arrived in Cyprus fortunately we changed them with friends who visited us from Luxor last year. I am not sure Carrie and I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone changes coins, I think its only paper money they changed.

As I stated, I have seen them changing $1 bills in the exchange houses, but had not ''seen'' them do so in the banks. They may do, but I have not been there when they did. Pay attention :D

Arrival in Cairo last night was painless. As always EgyptAir did an excellent job, the flight was on time. On arrival Ibought the Visa at the bank and changed my sterling 24.74 to the £. Proceeded to domestic security which is so slow and painful, but they have a job to do so it’s worth the hassle. MS60 departed and arrived on time and my rep was there to meet me. Hols are now well underway.

I would strongly suggest Keefy that any, even the slightly shrewdest businessman would accept any denominational banknote, other than The LE, which in my opinion is running at a hidden devaluation rate of between, a staggering 15 and 20%. per annum.

I am certain that any Egyptian dealing with foreign tourists would know where to exchange banknotes at a reasonable rate other than the banks. Unfortunately the black market in Egypt is as active as it has ever been.

I am sure they do know other places to change them, and most probably have, It just seems very strange to why they say they have problems at the bank, so the question still remains, does anyone know if the banks change 1 dollar bills?
