Campaign to renovate Hassan Fathy Village in Luxor
By: Omnia Osama Thu, Nov. 16, 2017

CAIRO – 16 November 2017: UNESCO, the American University in Cairo and Luxor’s governor teamed up together to bring Hassan Fathy Village in Luxor to life again after years of destruction from erosion.

The three authorities have launched this initiative to rescue the village and make it suitable for human life. This comes as a part of greater development project to rebuild and renovate underrated historical places in Egypt.

“All buildings surrounding this village will be decorated in the village’s style to be more attractive and comfortable,” Luxor’s governor said to the press.

The village will be constructed through three phases. The first phase includes renovation of the Al-Khan building and the mosque, the second is to develop the Hassan Fathy home and theater, and the last phase encompasses rebuilding all homes situated in the village, according to the governor’s statement.

Hassan Fathy village is located on the Nile’s west bank in Luxor. It dates back to engineer Hassan Fathy, who was born on March 23, 1900. He was the first Egyptian member to serve on the teaching staff of the Faculty of Fine Arts, and he also worked as an engineering expert at the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA). His influence in engineering and architecture stretches all over the world, as he constructed many buildings in Athens, Greece.

It will be interesting to see if this comes about. I have a vague recollection of people talking about this happening many years ago, probably in Farag's day, but clearly nothing happened!

Here is an interesting short film about the village and current problems faced by the inhabitants

phpBB [video]

Some would say that Hassan Fathy's village smacked more of an architect's vanity project than a realistic home for the villagers unceremoniously displaced from the former Gourna....now known to tourists as the Valley of the Nobles. In particular, they seem to feel that rebuilding with fired red brick would be more sensible than Fathy's mudbrick on sandstone foundations....leading to a constant fight against water and salt erosion.

If the renovation project proceeds, one hopes the villagers will be more involved than they were in the original construction.

They the Yanks started on this 10 years ago,
Iv'e been a member of The Aga Khan Foundation that has also done very little in 10 years.
So don't expect very much to happen in the next 10.
Other than sabotaging the distorted over loud and illegal call to prayer speakers.
As supplied by the 'Boys in the Hood to most mosques during their brief but disastrous rule
Iv'e been thinking of a sleeping draught for the mu'addhin,
Who often just turns on the radio and goes back to sleep.
Bring back the human voice of Bilal..... 8)

You think ignoring him would make any difference?..... :urm:

I'm sure he has a clause in his last will & testament requiring his executors to post a final blast at luxor, Egypt etc.

Maybe even a clause setting up a trust - funding a bot to fire off occasional tirades in perpetuity.

No-one actually engages with him. He's a bit like the village idiot....dribbling in the corner and as predictable as the sunrise. A creature to be pitied.

At times you really must be careful how you describe things, in well known man talk, such reference means something quite different. ... :tk but then again, the end result of one, could quite well be the description of the other. :up

Newcastle is right. Middle class, particularly non-Egyptian academics and architects love him. At worst they appeal to the romanticism and nostalgia of people who will never have to live in them. Others, including locals say they were poorly built, not based on the needs of possible residents and looked backwards and not forwards. On the other hand in a country that has produced near universally ugly buildings for the past 70 years he stands out and is the only Egyptian architect with an international reputation.

I didn'y know they were built on sandstone foundations. If so this should mean that salt/water table shouldn't 'seep up' the walls - yet it does. Wonder when those tens of millions of UN money will reduce the west bank water table - and protect the temples from similar 'seep up'.

If the needs of locals are taken into account in any public project that will be a first. In any event asking what their needs are in this matter would raise their expectations that their needs/opinions were relevant to other matters - and who in power would want this?
