One Day Nile Cruise

Post by AladdinSane » Wed May 31, 2017 2:11 pm

I haven't visited Luxor since 2008 and was wondering if the one day Nile Cruises still exist?
I experienced one during my previous visit which traveled to and from Dendera.

If we were staying in a Luxor hotel, we often took the one day cruise to Denderah on the Lotus boat and back then you had to make sure of getting a place. I doubt very much in the present climate if the boat still runs which is a shame really as they spent so much money on the new docking facilities in anticipation of a lot more visitors and of course for those that never saw it, the cleaning and preservation of the wonderful colours at Denderah made a fantastic difference from how it looked at one time, one of my favourites along with Medinet Habu :up

I don't think it's been running for some years. I remember enquiring about it in 2013 at Petra Travel, and it wasn't available then. Shame really, as I'm sure I wold gave enjoyed it.

Most cruises now include a trip to Dendera as well as to Aswan as the guests stay on board for the duration.

Would that be by coach?

The Thomson boats i used to travel on had Dendara on their schedule but ive not cruised on any other that have since.

You would cruise to as close as possible on the Nile and then take a coach.

From memory the coach wasnt a long journey.

You are correct Zooropa, at one time all the Thomson cruises took in Denderah as a part of their itinerary, they usually did it as the last trip on the return leg of a 7 day cruise. As you said they would dock up near to and you were then taken in by a short coach ride and crossed the bridge with those wonderfully coloured murals on the sides. I think the intention was for them to use the new docking facilities that they had built to avoid this, but depending upon water levels I think there may still have been some problems.

It's a year since I was last at Dendera but I'm having difficulty in placing these murals.

The only road bridge I've ever known which crossed the river in Qena is the one which is a continuation of the Safaga-Qena highway...over a new flyover (crossing a canal and the rail line). After crossing the Nile.....then past a giant urn covered in mosaic tiling.... then you reach a crossroads where you turn right for the road to Dendera.

I'm trying to think where these murals you mention are.

It may well be the same place, but to my memory it was a mural on a wall and as you say they were mosaic tiles, but I may be mistaken as it is some years since I did that particular route to Denderah, maybe over 12 years ago :tk

It was the reference to "..crossed the bridge with those wonderfully coloured murals on the sides" that confused me.

I've crossed that bridge many times and never noticed any murals (on the bridge, that is).

Or perhaps they're somewhere nearby?

Then again, I tend to be in a world of my own when driving

Perhaps saying "on the side" was a bit to literal, I should have just said “those nearby murals”. I know I am not mistaken and they were somewhere near the bridge, perhaps near one of the road junctions, I used to look out for them. However I have just run through the only video I have taken of a boat trip to Denderah and it was on the Lotus boat and it looks like it was taken around 2008, I have about 20 hours of raw video footage of Egypt and the monuments plus about half a Terra Byte of images. Unfortunately although I can confirm that it was the Quena bridge crossing it does not contain any shot of the murals, I do remember taking a photograph at one time, but that was before digital cameras so I may not now have it as a scanned image. You can see the new boat docking areas to the left and right as we cross the bridge on the way back from the temple. I suppose I should also say they were new a couple of years before my video was taken, maybe around 2006?

I've just searched through 100's of photographs on here looking for the mosaic murals that have been mentioned. I'm sure that LivinginLuxor posted some many years ago, and I'm equally sure they were on a bridge. Alas, I've not found the photographs I'm thinking of but possibly someone else will.

Most folk would have happy memories of this Temple. but for me, it was the one and only time in my life that I've collapsed with severe heatstroke.

Not in the last few years, up to January 2016.

To be clear there are no one day cruises.
The one day to Dendara finished many years ago.
