Including the tours, I'd guess 3000 - 4000 GBP.

I've never been tempted by the "standard" Nile cruises.

Cooped up with people I might, or might not, get on with...suffering a monotonous food regime...and, God help me, Egyptian theme parties.....no thank you :stp

As for 15 days of it from Cairo...I'd have thrown myself overboard long before reaching Aswan so it doesn't sound like one for me.

Now a luxury dahabiya cruise, a la "Death on the Nile", with personally-vetted shipmates....bring it on!!

Its by far my fav way to visit Egypt, these nights are a bit cheesy but they can be a laugh, and they are easily avoided if they are not your thing.

For me, floating down the Nile is beyond enjoyable.

But you don't need a boat for that.

You'd be amazed at the things that 'float down the Nile'..... :a45:

You must have been on some crap Nile cruises to describe the food in such a way, most I have been on have had a better selection and presentation as any Luxor hotel I have stayed in. As for the themed nights, well quite simply you don’t have to join in with anything you don’t want and you can just sit and while away the evening in some pleasant company on deck or in the lounge. I can honestly say that I/we have always found people that I/we could get on with and many times we would all meet up after the cruise at somewhere like the OWP for afternoon tea and cakes and have a laugh and reminisce, I still keep in contact with people I have met on Nile cruises and they were some of the best holidays I have had in Egypt.

I couldn't agree more Horus. I'm coming back for the third year running and staying on The Esadora. I've found everything to be excellent. The food was good along with the bar and room service. If you don't like Egyptian themed evening why not go ashore and have a good look round where ever the boat docks. The only downside is when hords of Chinese board in Aswan. You have to make sure you're down early or they'll clean the buffet. However you don't see them in the bar apart from ordering hot water for their pot noodles.

I stayed on the Sonesta for the last few days last year for $300. There were only 10 people onboard. So for 4 nights I thought that was quite good considering the normal price is double that.

Each to their own. My experience of Nile cruise food is hearsay (and the comparison with Luxor hotel food does nothing to change my prejudices  ). As stated, I've never been on a Nile cruise.

And, as you know, I can be an obnoxious barsteward, and therefore unsuited to close companionship on a boat. ;)

Never been on a Nile Cruise but intend to do so later in the year, I have noted the name of the boat mentioned, where does it tie up might just have a little visit and check out the prices.
Like Newcastle I'm not very sociable or other wise known as a miserable ... but just so long as there are no noisy kids on board I think I could manage.

My old sparing partner on here, Stan, would always call them "floating gin palaces" and rubbish them at any opportunity even though he had never been on one. Although joking apart I would agree with you on the general standard of food in Luxor hotels leaving a lot to be desired at times even though I have tried most of the better ones. However on the cruise boats I have never had the same food twice in one holiday even though I usually do as Zooropa does and take the 7 day option. I personally like the fact that I can take or leave the organised tours and we would often skip the West Bank tour which is usually the first one, in favour of checking the city out, seeing some old friends and calling into the hotel where we will stay on the second week to make sure everything is in order. The same with the tour itinerary, I usually sit and have a chat with the appointed group guide when we arrive on the boat and explain that as we have visited many times we do not need his guided tour, we will accompany the group, but do our own thing once we are there. This has never presented any problems as I always give them their expected tip at the end in any event.

As to the social side we have always found most people friendly and good company, there are usually a few miserable b’s like yourself, :D but they usually finish up joining in and having a laugh or two. A really good point is that even for an experienced visitor the hassle is seriously reduced as all the tickets are procured for you and the transport between venues is organised so the interaction is limited other than running the usual gauntlet at the entrances. One of the most enjoyable experiences is going through the Esna lock and the carpet and galebaya sellers rowing their little boats around the ship and calling out their wares, throwing stuff up onto the deck for approval then athletically leaping about in order to catch them again when thrown back, or diving into the river to retrieve a poorly lobbed item and all with lots of shouting and laughing, it must have been like that when Thomas Cooke organised his first tours.

We have done most options from cruises to good hotels and we enjoyed our last cruise so much that we had decided that our next visit would be the same 7 day cruise back to back for two weeks rather than bother with Luxor hotels, that was before the long cruise became available again. Who knows we may meet up on one and spend the whole cruise arguing about Brexit. ;)

Carrie, many boats now seem to tie up near the bridge.

Good question! Have no idea of the area but from the Sonesta carry on down the road, follow the road round to the left until you see a big shop sign (can't remember what it is) turn right and follow the road to the end. You'll go through a mini security area and it's just in front of you. Failing that take a ride on the river up stream and from the Sonesta it's a little further down on the left hand side. Hope that helps. It sails Tuesday afternoon and returns Sunday evening.
