Changing Sterling in Luxor

Post by crewmeal » Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:12 am

This morning I went to the HSBC bank next to the Corniche only to be told they would not change Sterling notes. The little security man behind the desk kept saying 'government' When I asked to see someone I was told that the bank didn't change money and he didn't know why!! He did say that a UK bank card would be OK in an ATM which it was.

I went to the ADIB bank and across the road and they glad changed it but took 20 mins to do so. The rate to change Sterling was 11.35 to the pound.

Why didn't you go to one of the exchange offices?

For the last three years or so the HSBC will only change Stirling for HSBC account holders. This ruling came down from the bank of Cairo apparently.

According to A Four the rate should be 15EP to 1GBP this weekend. What happened?

Carrie. Where are the exchange offices as this would be useful to know?

Walk past McDonalds, keep to the main road making towards the Emilio Hotel, three along that stretch, one on Station Street, right hand side, one at the top of Station Street round the corner to the right coming from the Temple.
Best one I think is the one past McDonalds, they always seem to have the best rate, painted green and up some steps from the road but very easy to see.

Carrie. Many thanks for that. We keep bringing less and less LE with us because we are fed up with getting ripped of on the buy back when we get home. We have been taking excess British sterling with us in case we need to exchange some more, but have never known where to get the best legitimate exchange from, and have luckily never needed to do it yet.

Exchanging sterling for LE in the UK is not a cost effective way of changing your money. It is still far better to make the exchange in Egypt (unless things have drastically changed recently). Of course, some people prefer to have some LE in their pocket ready to deal with immediate expenses on arrival, which is understandable. It is possible to make a currency exchange at the airport if needs be and the rates there are usually pretty good and certainly better than in the UK. Making the exchange in Egypt should also give you greater flexibility in budgeting and not having too much LE left at the end of the visit and, as you know, changing LE back to sterling in the UK is just not worth the effort.

Thanks for that HEPZIBAH. Old habits die hard, but we will definitely have a change of plan money wise for our return next May. We will check things out nearer to the time of our next visit, but can't see much changing before then.

Well, as you may have noticed, I have been rather busy but yes you are right the LE did not devalue, so why ?

As you probably read on another subject post, the I.M.F. could not get Egypt to accept it is in **** street, and it will be a dreadful long time before the smell will disappear, then, those who have the vision of what Egypt's future will look like have to make a vital decision as to whether it's people wish to remain on that 'one way street and clean it up, or start from scratch and get out of that 'street' altogether. In other words the nation must soon suspend parliament, and in reality go into administration,.........turkeys never like to hear the word Christmas.

Egypt has now entered un-chartered waters, and as another member of this forum has already indicated,............."there may be trouble ahead".

I would have thought that you could have foreseen that A Four, even I an ignoramus as I am regarding financial matters, did.

Oh but I did Carrie, the only thing that failed was that when the I.M.F. realised that the clowns had entered the arena, it was to be expected that the ringmaster should have taken command. You may remember some time ago now when they held the election in Egypt, I wrote on here that any person who put themselves up for a life in parliament would be a fool, and would certainly be blamed by his or her constituents for, what we can see, is unfolding before our very eyes.

Today, for one journey in Zone 1 London Underground will cost £2-40, imagine that going up to £3-60 tomorrow,.........last week the underground fare in Cairo went up from 1LE to 1.50LE, may not sound a lot, but a 50% rise in anyone's language.

Before we left Luxor, dog biscuits went up 30LE in one week, I bet the daily diet of Cleopatra has risen as well. Also many other food prices had risen by between 1 and 5LE. I would imagine that the locals will be cutting back further soon, how they will I do not know but I am sure they will some how. What I would like to know is how the Country will now attract investors. Will they or won't they or will they just leave the place to be barren. It may be that they turn back the clock further to when a young lad on his way to market decided to swap a lamb for a potatoe, and started trading all those years ago. Charles Dickens comes to mind also and one of his famous novels.

I don't think dog biscuits are top of the Egyptian shopping list.
