Tourist Office

Post by HEPZIBAH »

I vaguely recall there used to be a Tourist Office in Luxor. I think (if it really existed) it was close to the Railway Station. Does anyone know if is still operating? If so, is it where I think it is? Does anyone have a website link for a Tourist Office, or Official Tourist Information site?

Yes there is a tourist office opposite the railway station. They are open and must be the most unhelpful place in Luxor. Staff in there have no literature in English, give incorrect information and on the whole are just not interested.
I went in recently, just because I was too lazy to walk another 50 yards to the Go Bus depot, asked about the times of buses to Hurghada and was told that there were no buses to Hurghada. Not that tourists were not allowed to travel on buses but that there were none, you had to go by taxi and if I called at the next desk i.e. Karnak Travel, they would sort me out.

The last Governor was supposed to have opened a new Tourist Office for tourists and ex pats alike, but between the committee that was formed and the powers that be nothing happened. Besides that most of the committee no longer live in Luxor, they faded back to the Red Sea for work. Seems the Red Sea may not be so stringent on Work Permits

Carrie is right that place is the last place you want to go for to get information. I think it was a job fill project. Besides that what does Luxor want a an information centre for, there are no tourists. But one thing that has been noticed, while shops have been closing, that information centre has stayed open.

If that is the case, who is it that can't use the present one - tourists or expats? :D

I think anyone can use it, but trying to get the right information is a lottery.
