I never encountered it in the Caribbean Islands, but then that was ovet 20 years ago.

I did notice the wrapping machines at Mexico airport!

I'd advise against this.
Dunno how many times I've given "someone in Egypt"cash to get me a sim card(for unlocked mobile fone)and money for credit.
It's not so much that I'm important to anyone in Luxor..it's more so that I can contact family back home and let them know I've arrived safe, much more cheaply than using UK number.
Been "ripped off"every time!
They've pocketed the odd 20/30le..just because I was naive.

Anyway, last time I visited I did it myself.Went to vodafone shop in Luxor, took passport, etc. All in all a very easy process. They put in new SIM,added credit, gave me receipt,etc..NO problem.

I'll do it this way in future.

God,don't I know it newcastle.I'm far too trusting.
Just because I wouldn't do this with people..doesn't mean they won't do it with me!

Yes.yes..shame on me..cos I always look for the good in people..and especially in a country where I am merely a visitor..and sometimes depend on others to do the right thing.

Always think it's sad how even erstwhile friends can "rip"you off.Cos,quite honestly,if they'd asked for the 20/30 Egyptian le,they would probably have been given it.

It's kinda like Ahmed, the caleche driver in Luxor. He's always with Suzie and she always seems to need new shoes or something else.Well..he doesn't beat about the bush!He will ask me for money for this..also a pack of Cleopatra cigarettes now and again.
I much prefer it that way.Know where I stand with him. It's the furtive ones I can't stand. The ones who will offer to do you a favour...then rip you off!
I assume you know where I'm coming from!

If you ask someone to top up before you arrive, then you owe them a tenner - if they trust you enough to do it.

Another good reason for locking luggage is so that no one can add anything to it.

The film wrap machines are present in many airports around the world.... or perhaps I should say that I have seen them at many of the airports I have travelled through in recent years. They are used for a number of reasons, not just as a deterrent to theft. It protects luggage from damage such as tears in soft bags, liquid damage (I once had a rucksack disappear in transit. When it finally was returned to me it was stained and stank of aviation fuel), and bags bursting open because they were not secure.

Modern day Samsonite luggage has a special locking device that allows U.S. Customs people to open your cases without you even knowing it.

I find it very difficult to believe that a person of your age has for what is about a third of your life, had a mobile phone, that you should write such a statement, how on earth did you survive before.

It was only for my last two years in Egypt that I had one of these things, I never took it out with me, and people who I met in town were on most occasions on time. I was given an old Nokia phone, which I am pleased to say I still have.

Why people in the the U.K. pay £50 per month contracts is, in my opinion beyond belief and I hope that the young, who are more reliant on these things, will realise this when interest rate rise on their mortgages in the next few months. For the past eight year they have never had it so good, but in that time never has so much money be wasted.

When I am on holiday in Egypt for a month or so the last thing I want is a mobile phone.

Exactly. Just mention Schappelle Corby to any Aussie traveller.

LLL, I'm talking about add-on not built-in locks, which these days usually have a feature that enables US Customs to open them without having to damage them, known as TSA compatible.

I am on a very old tariff Virgin contract where I pay monthly in arrears for my calls only. I very rarely pay as much as £1 per month. I only ever used "data" on my phone one time. There is usually free Wi-Fi available in the UK these days.
