That depends on whether you are flying in to Luxor direct or if you are landing in Cairo first and getting an internal flight to Luxor.

If flying via Cairo then you will need to get visa's in Cairo before flying on to Luxor.

Thanks both. I was familiar with that Hepzibah, being the way I have always had to enter the country, but a friend is arriving soon on one of the new direct to Luxor flights. :wi

So where do you get it, over to the left? Whenever I've arrived I've gone straight to the diagonally opposite corner for a trolley then to the baggage carousel, never bothering to look around. I can picture the toilets entry on the far wall, but nothing definite on the left or right walls. I've never noticed anyone queuing for anything. After my marathon journey I'm just focused on getting my suitcase and getting out the door to my husband.

I guessed you probably were aware. I did think it worth pointing out in case anyone else who isn't familiar is reading.

When going through arrivals the banks/visa kiosks are on the left and to the back. I generally find that the further ones have the shortest queue. That being said, I wouldn't like to guess how many kiosks are open these days and I assume that they have not moved location since I last arrived. From there, it's standard procedure...on to Passport Control and then out though the door - where the passport is usually requested again - and on into the baggage hall.

I came through on Monday evening and there was only one bank kiosk open - the furthest one away from the door on the left-hand side, near the back of the arrivals hall. No queue, just one person in front of me (but then I am always quick off the bus to try to avoid any queues). Interestingly there couldn't have been more than about 40-50 people on the plane. When I went back to the UK last month every seat was taken, except the fancy ones at the front of course, and there were 2 security guards on the plane, one sitting at the front of the cheap seats and one right at the back. I've never noticed them before.

Hmmm, Hepzibah have I been arriving at a different building??? From plane to bus to baggage collection, get baggage, outside i.e. no passport control. But I guess it's because I did all that in Cairo.

I enter right hand corner, exit right hand corner at far end of the room, right beside the carousel (one of two).

Note that the Luxor visa bank desks are on the far left corner of the International Arrivals hall before the passport checks.

When arriving from Cairo one does not visit this area. Not even if one has checked ones baggage through from a foreign airport. One arrives in Domestic Arrivals and passes through a door at the far left corner into the International Baggage area.

Same building just different doors into arrivals area for domestic and international flights.

When I have booked Egyptair and checked my luggage through from London to Luxor but had to take the non direct (via Cairo) flight I have bought my visa at Cairo and transfer from international to domestic flight. On arrival in Luxor I have been escorted through to baggage hall but don't remember the direction.

Not in my experience Brian, see my previous comment. Or do you mean you have to do this to get the visa?

If one has checked ones baggage through to Luxor but transferred to Domestic at Cairo, this is the procedure. Checked-through baggage arrives on the International Baggage carousels as one has to then pass through customs.

Any information on flights to Istanbul would be appreciated. From Cairo only? Or from Luxor as well? Rough idea of return costs back into Egypt. Also if any have been, is there an hotel close to the arrivals airport? Many thanks for.

@Dusak - you may be interested in a FB group called International Visa Group where this topic has been discussed, with recommendations on accommodation etc near to the airport. From what I remember, I think there are direct flights from Hurghada for about 1000 LE return, not sure about Luxor though

:tk Were you not the one to tell us that this was no longer an option? I have tried to find the post.

My friend arrives via Cairo and I have told her that this time, she may have to get her luggage there and check in at domestics. Of course she will see for herself, but it us good to be prepared.

Dusak, you have several options. You can fly EgyptAir Luxor-Cairo-Istanbul, last year I paid about £210 return including meals and 46 kilos of luggage. You can also fly Cairo-Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, not sure of price but it will be cheaper than EgyptAir and includes full service ie free alcohol.

This year I'm flying Turkish Airlines Izmir-Istanbul- Hurghada which cost £171 return (booked through EBookers); the price for Hurghada-Istanbul would be a little cheaper. I also understand that Pegasus are doing very cheap flights Hughada-Istanbul, however this is to Sabiha Gokcen airport which is way over on the Asian side, so a long transfer by service bus to the city centre.

As far as hotels go you are spoilt for choice, depends what you intend doing in Istanbul. I have stayed at the WOW hotel at Ataturk airport - the arrival airport for EgyptAir and Turkish Airlines. Pricey but convenient. Your best bet is to look at Travel Republic - I always use them and find them reliable.

Be warned, getting anywhere in Istanbul by road is a nightmare and can take a long, long time. The Metro runs from the airport to the main city centre, passing the main bus station on the way.

Remember you need an e-visa for Turkey. Apply online & print off before travelling. .

:tk That is what I had heard and I have since not had any more information either way.

So I just checked on the Egyptair site and read:

"Through Check in

Baggage through Check in is not allowed from international overseas stations to Cairo via domestic Stations in Egypt and Vice Versa "

To the best of my knowledge Turkish Airlines have flights from Istanbul Ataturk to Alexandria, Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm al Sheik nightly. These all leave Ataturk within half an hour of each other at around midnight, returning in the early morning.

No Turkish Airlines flights to Sharm at present, for obvious reasons.

An E-Visa is best but it's still possible to buy a Visa on arrival from self service kiosks, more expensive though.
