Vegetarians in Egypt

Post by cambo » Sat Mar 07, 2015 9:13 pm

I am planning a big three month trip to Egypt and need help. I am a vegetarian but not vegan. Is there any hope for me while eating out in Egypt? I am showing almost no information on the web about this. Will I starve? Be eating only dates for 3 months? Help!

Are you planning on self catering or staying in a hotel? Either way you shouldn't have too many problems.

I have survived for ten years as a vegetarian in Egypt.
:eat

I probably miss out on a lot when I am not sure that it has not been cooked with meat, but there are plenty of local vegetarian safe dishes and tasty vegetables to prepare, not to mention delicious street food. :P

Thanks you guys. I did manage to find a website with more details. Just curious, can one assume the falafel is not cooked in animal fat.
Oh, and will the locals think I am a complete freak for passing on the animals.

Well, appearing freaky will just have to do. Funny but I wanted to come to Egypt because I do not stand out as much as I do in my usual Asian travels. I guess vegetarianism will mark me as odd. Oh well.

You can be discrete. Meat is a luxury for many Egyptians.

Okay. I will tell the locals I simply cannot afford meat.

:o NOOOH, then you will be offered more meat! Often a dinner turns out to be vegetarian anyway.

It will be assumed that your reason for not eating meat is that you are afraid of getting fat, and you will be told you that you look great as you are. Same thing if you drink tea without sugar.

Sometimes when travelling, it helps to be the monkey in the cage rather than the observer.

And if invited should I inform the host/hostess that I don't eat meat. Also, should I bring a little gift?

The people will not grasp the concept of vegetarianism, but they do understand "siyami", which is the Coptic fasting diet. But that is vegan, not vegetarian. Most things will be cooked in animal broth even if they are vegetable dishes, so if your reason for vegetarianism is not doctrine, you might want to just do your best knowing you won't necessarily always avoid animal products.

Falafel, more commonly known as ta'amiya, is normally cooked in oil.

The koshary in Luxor is delicious, I could live on it exclusively for the week. Sure you will be fine.

I say I like meat but it doesn't like me - actually that's true I can't eat red meat anyway.

So I say I have "hasasseya" which I gather is allergy. Then they don't press meat on me. 8)
