Buying Visa

Post by Luxoritis »

Travelling to Cairo soon , has anyone been recently and bought a visa? I know it's $25 but was going to pay in £'s if they aren't ripping everyone off. Is £15 about the going rate?

Yes, flew into Cairo couple of weeks ago, and had my tenner in my passport as usual, threw it at the bank teller and I totally forgot it had gone up! my travel weary brain could'nt comprehend what he was gesticulating about! I cottoned on and gave him another fiver. Sorted!

Always better having the correct amount in US $, then there is no arguments, paying the face value of the visa.
They will attempt to rip you off with artificial exchange rates if you present any other form of currency in my experience..

Never, ever, ever go to the Thomas Cook line at the airport for your Visa. :td

I'm pleased to say that I don't think I've ever been ripped off when paying for my visa using sterling. I do check the USD/GBP exchange rate before I leave the UK and then, when the visa was $15, I would usually have a £10 note ready with passport and a £5 note handy but not visible, and definitely not in my purse so that I had to open it in full view.

On one occasion the chap was, let's say, slow to give me my change but I just stood there with my hand out and made a joke about it. On another occasion I was stunned to receive my change in sterling coins!

Next time I visit Egypt, assuming the exchange rate is more or less the same I will adopt the same procedure - £15 ready and £5 handy just in case.

Not Cairo Bennu, but our Beloved Luxor, which at some point most of us will have to go through this baptism..
Cairo is just one loooong wait in line, which is where my wife comes in handy, she has the patience, and as with Hepzi's experince, the other long wait for the correct change. :zz

I still persist, have your US Dollars ready in the exact amount, it's faster in the long run...

I cannot answer Luxoritis' question about Cairo right now, but arriving on an almost full Egyptair or Swiss flight, I have never had to stand in line for more than a couple of minutes and have always got an attractive exchange rate there, my change, a receipt and a smile. With what I have read on Luxor4u, it sounds like there is no comparison between Luxor and Cairo.

Experiences vary Bennu, you should know that, but lucky you 2 mins for a visa, a receipt and a smile at Cairo airport !!! :br
Did they offer you a free manicure as well ?

It probably because I am a belligerent bugger around those who claim to have authority that I wait, get the attempted rip off and never saw a penny change from the Thomas Cook stand, that I never ever go to.. :tk

Have to say, I've never had to wait long for a visa and currency exchange at either Cairo or Luxor airport - even in the days when more than one full flight would appear at the same time!

Queuing up at Luxor passport control - now that is a different matter. However, most of the time I've had to queue there for any length of time is because of all those daft folks in front of me who were too stupid to fill in Arrival cards or buy their visa before getting in that queue. (Usually those that didn't buy the visa were adamant they didn't need one because their friends had been to Egypt before and they didn't need one. Ermm which part of Egypt...Sharm! )

I usually carry about £100 ($150-160) when travelling - this is usually enough for the visa and duty free - it saves having to try and work out what the price in GB£s should be and saves on the possibility of the cashier trying to rip me off.

My daughter has just picked up $25 from Tesco for me - shes says it cost £14.94, so its actually cheaper to get Dollars before you travel and pay that way.

I thought it would cost me more.

And as has been pointed out quite a bit, paying in dollars prevents any silliness on the part of the person giving you your visa.
