Luxor off the map

Post by Bearded Brian » Wed Sep 04, 2013 6:11 pm

Easyjet have just released their flights for the period mid March to mid-June and nothing is showing up for flights to Luxor - they have even removed the orange dot from Luxor on their map. Hopefully this isn't a sign that they are pulling out of Luxor altogether and the flights will be re-instated as soon as the FCO say Luxor is safe.

My wife went to the Travel agent in town, and they indicated that May 2014, may see the holidays re-instated.
Probably, there Holiday companies issue a new Brouchure round about then, and the situation will have been re-evaluated prior to the brochure going to press.

My issue is that I would happily travel to Egypt, by whatever means or route I could.. :up but my Wife will only do the package holiday..

They seem to be playing a dangerous game of deception. A friend here had flights booked for December but was told they were cancelled. She is trying to get a refund without much success but when I challenged Easyjet today via Twitter they claimed the flight was still scheduled. Basically avoiding paying the refund.

We have friends that have had Easyjet flights cancelled well into next year, I will make a forecast, reading between the lines and what people have posted on here, Easyjet will not fly to Luxor until at least September 2014.

If they have cancelled until March 2014, only 2 or 3 months after that, the Summer months are with us, meaning low numbers of visitors. So cannot see any carrier wanting to fly half empty aircraft during April, May and June.

Many people have said it, and many people know it, years will be taken to attract people back to Luxor, so investment needs to start now.

Problem with INVESTMENT Choccy, is that those who invest, like fast returns, or the certain promise of a long term cash cow to milk.... Catch: 22...

Easyjet are still getting the bookings to Egypt but via Hurghada

I like a lot of others by the sounds of it have rebooked cancelled Luxor flights to the Red Sea coast

so they are getting bookings from those that really do want to go out there so why reinstate Luxor yet

by the way I have had all monies returned from Easyjet for cancelled flights

If my missus an I went our separate ways, I would be broke and destitute...
(and probably beaten to within an inch of my life)

I would of course be free, :up but I dont think I could swap my wedding ring for a flight to Egypt either... :P

I got a full refund yesterday after 40 minutes arguing on the phone with easyjet. They wanted written confirmation from Omar he accepted the refund was ok to go to my debit card as I was cancelling! After insisting that someone ring me back or also refund the cost of the call, I finally got them to understand I had not cancelled anything, they had. I got the refund for october, december, jan 14 and march 14.

Tourists are back!

Last night, looking across the river at the large hotels, The Steigenberger actually had lights on in two of the rooms.

Sonesta, Isis, Iberotel and Winter Palace were swathed in darkness still, but at least it is a beginning!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

I don't think fast investments are good for Luxor at all BM, but there is nothing to stop Governates using long term investments. You see all to often people opening business's thinking they will make a kill and closing them a month later.

I believe the way forward is Government investment that can be sustained. There is another problem and that is Luxors position and rail and road networks, I believe I am right in saying there is no rail link to the Red Sea, the train to Cairo is often subject to heavy delays, or even stoppages through protesters and alike. Our advantage is that we have a decent airport for cargo transport. For tourists this is not good because the Tour Operators bump up the prices to Tourists and make it too costly to use the air fleet to see Egypt. We know that we can fly return to Cairo for a little over 700le return, just look at what the tour operators charge the holiday maker. It may be that standardising pricing would not go amiss, and also make it so all vendors show prices of their goods.

Another problem is if industry sets up then virtually everything that comes into Egypt is subject to import taxes pushing prices through the roof. I remember getting a security card reader from my bank and had to pay 120le duty, when I contacted the Bank the readers value was 6.25p Stirling.

I think its going to take people with vision to get things going again, but people with a proper vision and not quick fix visions, the tourist industry is so susceptible to low troughs when even minor things go wrong.

Before the revolution (2011, not 2013) there was a rail link from Kharga to Nag Hammadi and from Qena to the Red Sea. There had been an occasional passenger train, and a few freight trains. The lines suffered from sand-storms. Since 2011 a lot of the track has been lifted, whether legally or not, and the Western Desert road cut the track to Kharga.

I don't have much information on this, but until security is greatly improved it would be premature to anticipate a return of these railway lines.

I was surprised by this site: http://www.egyptianrailways.com/shop/20 ... timetable/ that suggests there are 2 trains a week between Qena and Kharga (and even Baris)

But ...

Last month I was informed by the EasyJet magazine that as Luxor had been dropped as a destination I was no longer needed as a destination writer. They promised to get back in touch if Luxor was added to the schedules again.

I guess if they ask the magazine people to add Luxor again. of course they may decide to add Luxor without putting it into the magazine again. Who knows but what I am saying is that this not a temporary change if Luxor has been dropped from the magazine

Guess with Easyjet it was inevitable, to fly with cheap prices you need full aircraft. If they have stopped its bound to hit people that have second homes here.
