Thank you BBlux! No, I really haven't seen it before. :) I suspected what it meant but I'm glad for the clarification. :up

It looks like you designed all the signs yourself, otherwise they would be covered with political posters and slogans. The bottom one is obviously a fake, as there is not any sign of a beer within 145 metres. :br

And who is the elegant person in the Nubian robes :?:

Where did you acquire this information from Brian?
It might be a very slight exaggeration, but I bet the percentage is above 99. I've travelled on both banks of the Nile, on and off what would generally be called the tourist itinerary, and in the Oases and Cairo. There is very little signage in English. And in the cities there is even less.

As a driver, one does not have much time to attempt reading the Arabic.
You are wrong Brian most signs now are International (Just picture) or like Stan says bilingual if it contains text. so your 99% is just a figure you have dreamt up in your head

Most likely Brian is trying to get you to use his driver pdmlynek, he normaly does, probably why he his lying to you by telling you all the signs are in Arabic, Just to let you know a fact though, you will not be insured if you do use a taxi or private car, only a licenced tour company is insured to take tourists out of Luxor, most likely a minibus will work out cheaper too. get in touch with Ahmed (owner) at http://www.petraluxor.com/

pdmlynek, like most have said I would abandon the idea of driving yourself due to the political situation, if I thought you would be 100% safe I would gladly say drive there yourself, In Mubarak times you most likely would have been.

Actually, I am thankful that Brian passed me his driver’s name. It is good to go somewhere where I can reach out to others.

As far as roadsigns go, I do understand what Brian is saying. I am not really worried about signs about speed limits or names of towns or any other normal signs, but rather the kind signs that local governments put up like “Warning! Midan Abdulah closed for repairs; take Sharia Maria instead.”

I am sorry but I don’t understand. Insured for what? If a taxi gets into an accident they’d expect me to pay for it? Otherwise why would I care if they are insured or not?

Thank you for passing me Ahmed’s name.

Thanks. We’ll see how things shake out.

It's rare you will find a sign saying a road is closed, till you are actualy at the road that is closed

Insured against a accident so that hospital bills and possible compensation is given to you.
Licenced and approved by the Goverment tourism sector to drive tourist about.

Anyway good luck on what you choose to do :)

If you are still intent on your driving quest pdlmynek I took a wander through to the far end of Karnak today, not been up that way for a couple of months. A new car rental office has opened. Fortunately my friend was with me as it was all in Arabic. But they will supply most types of vehicle for hire with driver or self drive from one day to six months including insurance. The office was closed as it was early morning but if you require more information I will get my friend to call in and see if they have more details or a website.

I don't know about you, but I was referring to a limousine, registered, licensed and insured to drive anywhere in Egypt, not a local taxi or private car. :sl:

OK Brian :)

Anyway, while out and about, using unnecessary petrol  I took many photo's of road signs (which I might post if needed), may I add, I did not take random photo's of signs, I went on a route that circled Luxor. To be fair to you, there is a small amount of signs in just Arabic, but nothing of importance (like one telling you about the new bridge that is been built) all the important signs I passed (speed, where to go, railway crossing etc.) were international (just picture signs) or bilingual.

I'm sorry Brian but you are going to have to take my word for it, I don't understand why you dont believe what I say, I have nothing to gain by lying.

OK, dsaxelby says she has the number and as she walks around all day with the laptop turned on strapped to her chest, she may give the answer quicker, but I will ask my friend to see if they have a website for you. Incidentally dsaxelby, you escaped from your place of imprisonment without saying tatar. But on the bright side it saved me taking the three of you out for a tatar meal. :up

lol... well we did wonder sitting there on the last night waiting for the call ..... Luckily for you the big one has an allergy to cats or we would have expected you to cook :P (I have heard that you use to host legendary BBQ ).

Imad number 01003671896 British Consulate 0227916000

Ok the reason I never offered this information before is that it is a very new company, the cars are new (had a drive myself ). However, I cannot recommend as I do not know if they rent to tourists, their insurance, and it would upset me if anything thwart happened to you. (could be a whole new scam). Just lock up your wife and daughter he is not fussy!!!!!

On a brighter note, I went for 3 weeks with my kids to a country on the verge of civil war, I had in place contingencies and plans if anything really kicked off. We had a fantastic adventure.

(We were all going to climb the wall and move in with Dusak, who has kindly placed a contraption to help us over his 6ft fence) :ks
It is what it is.

This is the only road sign in Arabic that I found while driving around, the same sign appears quite often.

Seems that you haven't been far from the city centre.

One other thing that I don't think has been mentioned on this thread are the mandatory police escorts in many parts of the country.

When I was in Kharga in spring 2011, every other tourist (no, there were not very many) was forced to wait at road blocks until a police escort could be found for them. These either rode in the tourist car or in convoy with it. I recall in particular a Belgian couple, returning overland with their 4x4 from a 3 year spell in Kenya. I hope that they eventually managed to board a cargo ship out of Alexandria.

Kharga is a special case due to the high security prison being there.
We took a group of rather bemused police on a tour of the main sites on the road south of Kharga because they had been detailed to escort us. The officer actually came into the sites because he had never seen them before and was interested. Poor guys had problems with a water leak in their truck and we kept losing them at speed. Caused a bit of panic at Dush because we used a different road to get there and they had lost us ahead. We collected them again as we left Dush without stopping as a sandstorm was brewing. They then had to follow us back the 60km to the Luxor turn off. I don't think they understood what we were doing :?
