Desert driving is something else or even along the coast requires real local skill especially at night as you can see headlights for many miles ahead seemingly on a different road but they are actually on your road and then suddenly in front of you, and Cairo driving is on a different planet of course..
Headlights? Do they have them in Egypt?

Thank you, Brian, Lisak, HEPZIBAH, Dusak, ‘Éclair, Who2, Bennu, Kunis, BBLUX, ‘Akshar, Bombay, I appreciate your advice.

Firstly, the fact that driving the Nile Valley is difficult is exactly why it attracts me. The more that hear that it is challenging the more I want to do it. I’d like to be able to experience it firsthand, and enjoy the thrill of traversing such difficulties. I know that I can get a driver, or jump on a train or plane or whatever, but my vacation in Egypt is not simply a destination, but a journey, including the non-touristy parts. Traversing such difficulties is what makes travel worthwhile.

On the other hand, if it does become too much of a hassle time wise, then, well, we’ll just fly or take a train, or whatever. My limited resource is time -- if I get hung up on some checkpoint for half a day, or around which I’d have to backtrack 100 km to go around, or wait for benzin for a day, well, that’s just more time from site seeing. Unfortunately, we don’t have time to do Cairo > Luxor > Cairo (where there are potentially cars to be had). I don't mind spending extra money, but I do mind spending extra time.

Secondly, as far as the maps go, I understand the shortage. There do not appear to be any good road maps of the Nile Valley; the scales are either too small, they lack coordinate system (lat/long or UTM), or are too old. I am having trouble even finding good 100K or 200K topos -- everything I see on Eastview on large scale are Soviet military topos that are 30-40 years old. In the end I ended up getting 500K TPCs from Omnimap and will annotate them with waypoints by hand. My kids are fine with navigating by lat./long. readouts.

Thirdly, thanks for the tip on traveling under a non-US passport. From and to the US we need to travel under US passport, but I assume that I can get Egypt visas into our non-US passport to use those at checkpoints throughout Egypt, correct?

Fourthly, yes, I do understand that getting a car from a private party will often take form of an older car. But that’s OK. The last thing that I want to do is to drive in a new big shiny SUV saying “please rob me”.

Thank you!

Not my business really but I gotta say this:

If, in this time of post revolution in a country on the possible potential verge of civil war having just ousted a President back by the Muslim Brotherhood with the country now under Military rule with curfews imposed - you're going to go there with the little woman and kids, rent a car and go tooling around the countryside against ALL ADVICE FROM PEOPLE ON HERE WHO KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT CAN BE - then YOU ARE RISKING THEIR LIVES :!:

The factions in Egypt are not playing games there right now - this IS the real thing and to be driving around by yourself with your family isn't using too much common sense. Actually it is using NONE. You're going to be putting YOU and YOUR FAMILY into possible potentially serious situations.......Are you really prepared to RISK THEIR LIVES just because you want to rent a car be ostensibly be a macho man and drive around Egypt? ARE YOU CRAZY?????

And you're on here asking people to help you organize this?!!!!! :stp :stp :stp :stp :stp (FYI - That emoticon means STOP!)

Grab a brain fellow ........ what you're proposing is ridiculous and while you maybe don't value your own life you've got no business jeopardizing the lives of your kids. NONE!

Well you wouldn't would you, you don't own a car.

pdmlynek, never let the spirit of adventure die within you. Just exercise a little more caution until things eventually get better, then enjoy, against a lifetime of sadness and regret because of an obstinate train of thought.

I don't know how accurate they are, but GPS navigators are available here - even if you use Google Maps on a smartphone.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

I can rent you a Cherooke 4x4 for $50,000. Please PM me if you are interested :mo It is a serious offer

I love using GPS, but I am keenly aware of its limitations. For road navigation I would never rely just on a GPS alone.

Google Maps work on a smart phone only if you are within mobile phone reception. And who knows if my mobile phone would communicate with local cell towers. Thus, we normally just use mobile phones to display lat./long. which work regardless of cell reception.

You have not at any point given us an indication of how fluent you are in written and spoken Arabic. Bear in mind that 99.999% of road signs are in Arabic only, and traffic police at the very many places that you are likely to get stopped are unlikely to speak any foreign language at all.

LLL gave good advice. The best advice I can offer is to please hire a local, experienced driver. He will save you no end of time, and that is important to you.

Yes, even out on the desert roads the signs are in English and Arabic. I've never yet seen a sign directing the way to a town that isn't bilingual.

Here is a few random signs, It's rare these days to find one just in Arabic and if you do there is normally an international sign near it :)

12011 12012 12013
12014 12015 12016
12017 12018 12019

Not sure about this sign, maybe Brian Yare might though

You must have done. There are some along the road near the Maritime Jollie Ville. I think leftovers from when the Mubarak's had villas there.
Basically no sounding horns at any time.

It might be a very slight exaggeration, but I bet the percentage is above 99. I've travelled on both banks of the Nile, on and off what would generally be called the tourist itinerary, and in the Oases and Cairo. There is very little signage in English. And in the cities there is even less.

As a driver, one does not have much time to attempt reading the Arabic.
