OW car rental from Aswan to Cairo

Post by pdmlynek » Sun Aug 25, 2013 5:34 am

(I've posted the following query on tripadvisor, but received limited replies, and no leads. I dunno, perhaps tripadvisor is too mainstream to deal with my type of travel.)

We are planning on visiting the Nile Valley for a week, and are considering getting a car in Aswan (or Luxor, if not Aswan), and driving it to Cairo. I am having trouble finding information on local car rental agencies which allow one way rental in Egypt (yes, I understand that the typical international car rental agencies do not do this). Thus, I am looking for a person, a family, or a local business in Upper Egypt, who are hungry, and who might be able to rent me their car for 5 or 6 days. If you have some connections who might be able to provide me with a vehicle, please let me know.

Thank you!

If they were going hungry, they wouldn't have a car. :urm:

:o Figure of speech. I just meant that if people are hungry to do business.
I am an experienced traveler, but a newbie to the Middle East.

(Especially at the moment) would it not be preferable to hire a car + driver?

I think you might find that due to the current climate out there, your options might be very limited.
When are you thinking of doing this trip?

I think the reason you are not getting much response is because generally speaking (and from information I have read over the years) Self Drive is not normally an option in Egypt. Car Hire firms seem to be few and far between and when found are costly. It is normally considered more cost effective, and easier on the nerves, to hire a car and driver. I would have thought this was particularly beneficial at the moment when so many places are perhaps better avoided and only a local/Arabic speaking person could pick on this.

If you do manage to find a car to hire and do a self drive tour, I hope you enjoy it and will let us all know how it went. I'm sure many of us dream about it but have not done it for one reason or another.

Personally speaking the least advisable thing to do in this current situation is fill a vehicle with Europeans and point it towards Cairo.

pdmlynek, You may find this old thread of some interest (there are others that are relevant too if you use the search facility - I just don't have the time to do it).

That thread is two years old but not much has changed.

If you get one make sure its got a floor and a steering wheel  In Egypt cars are mainly wrecks, you see a Mercedes on the advertisement but they never have them, you may end up with a 25 year old "Rent a Wreck"

I have driven alone in Cairo, an experience.
I have not heard of a car hire company here in Luxor for years.
I have a tough old jeep, but would not consider driving to Cairo without an Egyptian 'savvy and I do mean very 'savvy driver...

I know that this is not what you are asking, Pdmlynek, but a few days ago I spoke with a very experienced taxi driver in Luxor. He needs work like anyone else, but he said that he had refused driving to Cairo as he did not find the roads safe right now.

Rather you than me, city traffic is a nightmare, and it always appears to me that the Egyptians have their own method of driving and will you be able to get fuel

Tip:- Make sure the horn works or you wont get anywhere

I think the posts above should give you the idea that your planned trip by car is not possible or safe at the moment.
We own and have driven a 4x4 car here here in Luxor and out into the Western and Eastern deserts over the last 6 years. I honestly would not even consider making a trip such as you are proposing with the present situation. You would be driving through areas that are fundamentalist strongholds and where there are attacks on the Christian communities. A police escort is mandatory in these areas and has been for many, many years.
There are very few car rental companies in Luxor and travel is normally limited to within the Governorate.

We don't yet know what the poster really wants, but I am told that the Western Desert road is still open and safe.

It is visits to sites between Luxor and Cairo that are more uncertain, but a really good driver has a network of friends who will keep him informed of any problems.

I would be interested to know what the current situation is between Abydos and Beni Hassan, and also the proposed date of travel. :?:

I doubt that there is one square meter that could be called safe at the moment in the whole of Egypt, especially areas that are named safe, it just encourages the killers to make their point, its as safe as they allow it to be. Stay at the Red Sea resorts and go back contented with a tan, not an unwanted injury. Or just stay in Luxor and visit us living in the zoo.

With no decent maps, road signs or directions you would be lucky to find your way. My Egyptian husband missed the turn to Luxor in the dark and it took us ages to notice and get back on track.

If you were to go by road you would be much better to use an experienced driver. For example my driver was going to middle Egypt and saw trouble ahead at a checkpoint, so turned round and then took a road through the sugar cane, the guests were thankful he knew what he was doing.

He also negotiated at the checkpoints and explained to them what was going on and why. When they took an armed guard onboard he explained this man had no food or drink so they fed him. They had a fab journey 18 months ago but said the driver made the difference otherwise it would have been a nightmare.

Doing it now would be risky, with a good driver who knows exactly the road and current situation it might be calculated risk, without it is foolhardy.

Especially as they are Americans.

If you intend to do this trip you should take a car with a decent driver. :)))
If you go from Aswan to Luxor to Hurghada to Cairo this would be the best route by road.

I agree entirely, except that I would use or recommend my driver rather than yours.

Yes a driver in Egypt is more than just a driver, they can solve anything because they have local knowledge.

Desert driving is something else or even along the coast requires real local skill especially at night as you can see headlights for many miles ahead seemingly on a different road but they are actually on your road and then suddenly in front of you, and Cairo driving is on a different planet of course..
