South Of Little Britain

Post by Zooropa » Wed Jun 05, 2013 8:12 pm

Never really explored this end of Luxor, past Petra travel.

What's it like?

Is there anything of interest?

Came back this way last year after my trip to Abydos but did not have time to explore it as it was my last day but one.

Thanks boss, the way I came back was a longish road and I seem to remember a big wedding shop?

Id been in a car for 6 hours or more that day and was tired so it may not have been south of the Nile palace?

All I know is that id not been in that part of Luxor before??

It sounds like you mean the road that goes to the bridge to the West Bank. The new duty free shop is just at the start of that road on the right-hand side

You say that you are planning several trips across the river by taxi, so you'll get a view and see if it is worth exploring.

The pedant in me would suggest it might be quite dangerous to cross the Nile in a taxi, as a motorboat would be more apposite!

However, it is a pleasant drive with a couple of interesting places to see - one is Saqiya, which is a site devoted to the old Egyptian way of life, with water wheels, weaving equipment, ploughing, chopping chaff etc. There are many animals there, a field with examples (labelled) of most of the crops grown here. Or at least there were a couple of years ago. Then, just past the bridge there is a large restaurant and workshops for textiles and pottery. And of course, you could always go down to the Movenpick for the sunset concerts!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

You can also get to 'Banana Island' without getting in a boat or getting your feet wet.

Moevenpick Stan? there hasn't been a Moevenpick in Luxor for quite a few years now!

I think you are referring to the Jolieville.

Whats that big coffee shop on the main road, on the left hand side in Awamaya, almost opposite the road leading to where your sister is Barb. By motorbike or car you can hardly see it because it is low lying but it is a big place.

Last time I went there I decided to finish a mediocre lunch with a strawberry ice cream sundae, I got a banana sundae! (I cannot abide bananas, the smell makes me nauseous) so naturally was not impressed & when I refused it I was told "We don't have strawberries you WILL have banana instead!" He did finally take it away when he realised he was in danger of wearing it! Haven't been back since.

Now the Movenpick in Quseir is a very different matter, just finished visit number 11 :)

Jolie Ville used to be my favorite weekend getaway because of the infinity pool, and I have had some of my best meals in Egypt there. Last time I went the food was bland, even breakfast was a disappointment, but it is still a beautiful place.

There have been 2 lovely traffic islands built, one with a small temple in the middle, and another with a lovely green urn, surrounded by pot mushrooms that are lit at night, well worth a visit!! to see them, and get some lovely photographs.

I think the money would be better spent on a new generator. Concrete mushrooms and mini temples don't quite do it for me, especially as there are no tourists to appreciate these fine examples of art nouveau.
