Resumption of balloon flights in Luxor postponed

Post by DJKeefy » Tue Apr 02, 2013 8:10 am

Following a deadly February crash, hot air balloon flights were originally scheduled to resume on 1 April; future passengers will be required to sign legal document acknowledging possible risks.

Hot air balloon flights in the Upper Egyptian city of Luxor, due to resume on Monday, have been postponed, Egypt state-owned paper Al-Ahram reported, citing a civil aviation ministry official.

The flights, suspended since a balloon crash killed 19 tourists on 26 February, will not resume for another few days while a civil aviation committee completes investigations into their safety, according to Mohamed Attia, head of the committee.

The resumption of the flights will exclude Sky Cruise, the company to which the crashed balloon belonged, as well as 25 balloons of the Ultramagic N425 model involved in the tragedy, added Attia.

In recent days, the committee has met with the owners of hot air balloon companies in Luxor and their employees, including pilots and technicians, to explain the safety procedures to be followed on future flights.

Future passengers will be required to sign a legal document acknowledging the possible risks involved in hot air balloon flying.

This must raise questions about the validity of any personal insurance or the insurance cover of the balloon operator.
I would certainly want some written clarification of how this document impacts on other insurances???
If it is a dis-claimer, don't touch it.....

My travel insurance or personal insurance never covered any form of flight except that of "Commercial Airline transportation" hot air balloons and piloting or traveling in private/light airplanes was not included.

Every travel insurance I have had covers for Hot Air ballooning, and I only go for the standard policy.
Worldwide annual = £35

I agree about not touching a disclaimer. It would mean that the document would need to be read thoroughly and presented to my travelling group prior to booking the balloon flights so that it gives my group a fair choice if they wish to continue with the booking. I am re-thinking if this option will be included in my future itineraries. If members of my tour group would like the option of balloon flights the risks will be explained by me and then I will also need to provide a disclaimer if they take the ride because I am the first one that they will sue if there is an accident not the balloon company even if my travellers have travel insurance.

All balloon operators should have the appropriate insurance to cover accidents and not just be able to present a legal document explaining the risks or a disclaimer. My first question to balloon companies will be "I need to see a copy of your insurance including public liability". What do you think their answer will be?

If the company is an honest and caring one then your request should be a resounding 'yes, no problem'. I think all company's should have the insurance policy on open display, easily seen and read by the public as they book. If its through a rep, then they should carry a copy document. But in all likelihood, considering what has happened, I think that the customers will start asking for sight of it in any case.

My only regret, having been there over the last few weeks, was that we were denied the opportunity of another flight.

My point about this document though was that if it was in any way a blanket disclaimer, then even the insurers of reputable companies would deny liability in the event of a claim. I am not trying to scaremonger, just a word of caution that this document is studied by a qualified lawyer.

I still wonder why the authorities has found it necessary to introduce such a document...I think they are the scaremongers. :(

We went up in a balloon in November 2012, we were presented on the boat in the dark a disclaimer notice to sign we all thought this hysterical,( we are lawyers) they finally shined the camera light over it so we could read it ...... think M Mouse A **** appeared a few times. point being the disclaimers are already being presented (very badly)
It is what it is.
