I'm returning to Luxor on friday morning but have a question about currency. It mainly for buying the visa when i get to Luxor aiport. I have always travelled from the UK before, so always had sterling on me. However, this time i will be flying from China so i will only have RMB with me as hard currency!
Will they let me pay for my visa with this? Or possibly i can exchange this into LE at the airport and then buy the visa with that?
They must get chinese tourists with this problem so maybe they are used to it.
If everyone can let me know what they think because if this is going to be a problem i can change it into dollars in China at the airport.
Quick responses would be greatly appreciated as i leave in less than 24 hrs
I would normally advocate using sterling (when going from the UK) but in your case I would be tempted to get some USD before leaving China to pay for the visa at least. I am under the impression that you can use USD, Sterling or Euro for visa purchase. The cost of the visa is still $15.
The Egyptian Duty Free shops are also priced in USD so, if you are likely to use them you and you are making an exchange prior to departure you may want to factor that in too.
Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the relpies.
My main concern was whether the chinese currency would be accepted but after a little more research i don't think i'll be able to change it in Egypt. I think the best bet is to change it all into dollars before i arrive then there is no problem, with visa or exchanging into LE.
Now i can look forward to watching the football in the sun (after all this will probably be the final game for england in Euro 2012)

Travelling to Cairo soon , has anyone been recently and bought a visa? I know it's $25 but was going to pay in £'s if they aren't ripping everyone off. Is £15 about the going rate?

My daughter has just picked up $25 from Tesco for me - shes says it cost £14.94, so its actually cheaper to get Dollars before you travel and pay that way.
Can anyone please tell me if there has been any change to any of the notes in circulation at the moment, i.e. new notes. I ask because when we came home last year and tried to exchange left over...

My mistake should read 23.47. Sorry, hard day at the office. Less bang for your buck so to speak.
Now the rate for the Egyptian pound is worth around the 18le mark, that is clearly good news for the tourists (at least at present). I hope however it is not used as a tool to increase prices (I am...

This makes intersting reading. Lets hope that with the expected fall in sterling against the LE, that prices will fall acordingly, BUT I wont hold my breath.

Now we are set on freeing ourselves from the EU yoke, what is the going rate on sterling?

Very correct Brian, when we came it was around 7LE to the pound, could fill your weekly shopping trolley for around 200 - 300LE. The last weekly shop we did in Luxor was 1200LE which is a 400% rise...
