Why I left Luxor early

Post by Bearded Brian » Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:25 am

Hi

Some of you will know why I left Luxor 2 weeks earlier than planned but for those that don't know and are wondering why I didn't make the talk on Sunday etc here is the story.

Late on Saturday I just happened to open my hotmail account (on holiday I usually just open it Mon-fri) and 5 minutes earlier the lady next door in england had e-mailed me to say that there was water coming from my loft and running down the inside of the landing window. So you can imagine it's been rush rush rush to sort things out and a flew back on Monday. Every room has some water damage - the carpets are all wet and now have piles of wet clothes - the worst was my 3ft x4ft photo of the pyramids at night which has hung over the fire place for the last 20 years - no chance of replacing it and can't re-take it as the lighting at the show is now different.

Changing the flight on easeJet was a breeze although it did cost an extra £90 (£35 fee).

One good point it will make me chuck out a lot of stuff around the house that I don't really need (no not claiming them on the insurance)

Oh Brian I am so sorry  What a dreadful thing to happen.

I know exactly how you feel, the same thing happened to us in 2008. Having spent the winter here we went back to the UK & came back here for 2 weeks to decide about the house etc & the second day we had a call to say the decorator had arrived & was paddling! A pipe under the bath had burst, the hall ceiling was hanging down, walls & the wooden floor was ruined. Luckily he dealt with it all in our absence & we only had the insurance claim to handle when we got back after the 2 weeks. It made the decision for us though, we put the house on the market :!:

We missed you at the lecture but it was so crowded we just thought we hadn't seen you. Will you be able to rebook the dahabiya later or was that a one off?

:( Oh, I am sorry to hear that, Brian! :(
I hope that you will have a chance to come back here soon, it was so good to see you again.
I am always nervous, when I open my door after having been away, but I have been spared - it has only happened, when I was there. You will be relieved, as you say, to get rid of stuff that you do not need, but I am really sorry for you now and about the picture of the Pyramids. Come back to Egypt and look for something new to hang over the fireplace. After reading the headline, though, I am happy that nothing bad happened to you in Luxor. Please come back soon - you need a holiday after this! :)

Sorry to read this BBrian. What a nightmare. Hope in your enforced de-cluttering that nothing else too personal or important was damaged beyond salvage for you.

Thanks for all your replies. Now been moved to a nicer hotel but it's still not home - should find out tomorrow how long it's going to take to sort out. Still getting rid of a lot of stuff - think I made need a skip or two at this rate. As for the cruise I believe that if they are sailing when I return then I can have my prize. Not sure when I'll return - the original plan was another 4 weeks in Oct/Nov with my 4 week break in May / June being to the far east might switch these around or try for a couple of weeks in April or early July.

The sock count is now upto 94 (that's wet ones only) - still no sign of the dehumidifiers or the electrician to check the electrics - no movement on the accommodation side of things. Walls are still cold and damp to the touch. Taken the weekend off to stay with my sister - took a car load of china- glass and other odds and sods for her to keep, dish out to the kids or take to the charity shop. Considering how much china and glass there was I was extremely happy when all arrived safe and sound no chips or cracks. Some of the items had been up in the loft since 1985 and seeing them again has brought back some happy memories. Did find the original 6x4 print of the pyramids at night so hopefully all is not lost on that front.

Still don't know when everything is going into storeage but the earliest will be Wednesday or Thursday - gives me more time to sort out what to keep what to sell and what to chuck - at the rate I'm going I'll move back to an empty house or an E-Bay salesroom.

What a palaver, you poor thing. Very glad you found the photo, hopefully the insurance will pay for the replacement.

We used freecycle when we left the UK (people collect from you so saves trips to the charity shops etc) It's amazing how much you accumulate over the years isn't it :o
